My name is Jennifer, and I am the education nurse here at ITT Internal Medicine. Your doctor asked me to explain to you your diagnosis of hypertension. I will go over what hypertension is, how your cardiovascular system works and maintains homeostasis, how the rest of your body could be affected by hypertension, and what you can do to lower your blood pressure. Hypertension is a chronic medical condition where the pressure of blood in the arteries is elevated. Blood pressure is a measure of the force that blood pumps against the walls of the arteries, and will have two readings: the systolic pressure or the measure of the blood within the artery when the heart muscle is contracting, and the diastolic pressure or the pressure of the blood when the heart muscle is relaxing. It is read as systolic pressure over diastolic pressure. Hypertension is present when consistent readings are above 140 systolic over 90 diastolic. In hypertensive patients, usually both systolic and diastolic readings are both abnormally high. A normal blood pressure reading for an adult male would be under 120/80. Hypertension can be caused by many factors, and is considered a hereditary disease as well. This disease usually does not have one single identifiable cause because there are so many factors that can attribute to maintaining good cardio vascular health.
Your cardiovascular system transports blood containing oxygen & nutrients throughout your body to your different organ systems, and carbon dioxide & waste to different organs for elimination from the body. Your heart acts as the pump to pump the blood through your arteries to your different organs, and back through your veins. When this is happening as it should and all your organs and systems are working independently to work together, your body achieves a balance known as homeostasis. When this is not happening, it is called a homeostatic imbalance. Your body uses a negative feedback system to maintain the state of homeostasis. Your body has receptors called baroreceptors in the walls of certain blood vessels that detect high blood pressure, and send signals to your control center or brain that your blood pressure is high. Your brain should send output to your heart to slow its pumping and to your blood vessels to dilate to let blood flow through more freely and reduce the pressure. Hypertension is a disease that signals an interruption of this feedback system and therefore your body cannot achieve the homeostatic state of normal blood pressure.
Hypertension puts added strain on your heart, and can cause many other complications within your body. This disease shortens life expectancy and puts added strain on your heart, which can lead to Coronary Artery Disease, Hypertensive Heart Disease, and Chronic Kidney Disease. Hypertension can also cause negative affects to the brain and eyes. The constant abnormally high pressure of the blood pumping too hard against the arteries and the heart trying to keep up with the rate or the blood pressure can have lasting effects on all systems of the body since blood is how each system takes in and disposes of energy & waste.
The good news about hypertension is that it can be controlled with medicine your doctor can prescribe, but also can be affected by natural healthy changes you can make in your life. A reduced dietary salt intake and an increased intake of fruit while following a low-fat diet are the first steps to lowering hypertension. If you are overweight, weight loss is an important factor in lowering hypertension, as is lowering your intake of alcohol and caffeine. Stress is another external factor that can lead to high blood pressure. Your body performs at its best when it is at a homeostatic balance, and since hypertension will not allow your body to achieve that, getting your blood pressure under control is a very important part of keeping your body healthy and in good condition.

    Hypertension or otherwise known as high blood pressure is a term that millions of us are familiar with. According to Center for Disease Control and Prevention “more than 65 million individuals have hypertension” ("High Blood Pressure", 2010). Blood pressure is defined as the force of blood against the artery walls as it circulates through the body. It can cause health problems if it stays high for a long time. It is measured using two numbers. The first, systolic, number represents the pressure in your blood vessels when your heart beats. The second, diastolic, number represents the pressure in your vessels when your heart rests between beats ("High Blood Pressure", 2010). A healthy blood pressure reading is lower than 120/80mmHg and pre-hypertension is between 120/80mm Hg and 139/89mmHg. Stage one hypertension is between 140/90mm Hg and 159/99mm Hg and stage two hypertension is a reading of 160/100mm Hg or higher ("About High Blood Pressure", 2012). High blood pressure raises your risk for heart disease and stroke and is one of leading causes of death in the United States. It is often called the "silent killer" because many people don 't realize they have it and often has no warning signs or symptoms ("High Blood Pressure", 2010). High blood pressure, if left untreated, can cause severe damage to the body 's organs, including the brain, heart, blood vessels, and kidneys. Risk factors for hypertension include: increasing age, male, race (African Americans, Hispanics), diabetes, family history, high sodium diet, obesity, physical inactivity, alcohol, and tobacco use. The goal for treating people with this chronic condition is to decrease mortality and increase quality of life (Wang, MD & Vasan, MD, 2005 ).…

I want to make sure you understand what that is and what goes along with it. Hypertension is just our fancy word for high blood pressure. Now most people don’t even realize they have high blood pressure because more often than not, there are no signs or symptoms going along with it. Now, when checking your blood pressure we put on the blood pressure cuff and then we listen for your heart beat. There are two stages we get, one is as we release the pressure of the cuff, at a certain pressure we will hear your heart beat, and we record the pressure level, and that’s called systolic. As the pressure continues to be released, we can no longer hear your heart beat, and we record that pressure level, and that’s called diastolic. Normal blood pressure is about 120 over 80 or 120 systolic and 80 diastolic. Now there is something going on that either your body is unable to tell your brain that there is a problem here and your blood pressure is too high OR your body is just unable to control it on its own, so a medication will be used to help correct the problem. So what happens if you don’t take your medicine and you let this go untreated? Well, nothing good. Your high blood pressure can lead to heart attack, stroke, aneurysm (you get a bulge in your arteries and it blows up like a balloon), heart failure, vision loss, kidney could shut down, and the list goes on.…

    Hypertension is the term used to describe high blood pressure. Blood pressure is a measurement of the force against the walls of your arteries as your heart pumps blood through your body. Blood pressure readings are usually given as two numbers -- for example, 120 over 80 (written as 120/80 mmHg). One or both of these numbers can be too high. The top number is called the systolic blood pressure, which is the force of blood in the arteries as the heart beats, and the bottom number is called the diastolic blood pressure which is the force of blood in the arteries as the heart relaxes between beats. When you blood pressure is a normal it’s lower than 120/80 mmHg most of the time. High blood pressure (hypertension) which is what you have is when the reading is at least 140/90 or higher. One negative feedback system that helps regulate in blood pressure with negative feedback system( homeostatic imbalance) is when the heart beats faster or harder, blood pressure increases. If a stimulus causes blood pressure to rise the following sequence of events occurs. Baroreceptors (the receptors) pressure-sensitive nerve cells located in the walls of certain blood vessel, detect the higher pressure. The baroreceptors send nerve impulses (input) to the brain (control center). The brain nerve impulses (output) to the heart and blood vessels (the effectors). Heart rate decreases and blood vessels dilate (widen), which cause blood pressure to decrease (response). The organ systems involved are the heart which creates one force as it pumps blood into the arteries and through the circulatory system. The other force comes from the arteries resisting the blood flow. Homeostatic regulation of blood pressure by a negative feedback system the response is fed back into the system, and the system continues to lower blood pressure until there is a return to normal blood pressure (homeostasis). Arteries are vessels that carry blood from the pumping heart to all the tissues and organs of the body.
