What comes to the minds of most are bums, drug addicts, the mentally ill, drunks and criminals. The list goes on. The things that aren't thought about, however, are the children on the streets, displaced families, and America's veterans. But yet the only question that seems to present itself in American society is "How can we get them off of our streets?" instead of "How can we get them off of the streets?"Just getting these people off of the streets is a good start, but not the solution. This country needs to put equal focus on preventing homelessness as much as it does to help the homeless. America needs to take care of its homeless. This country needs to recognize the needs of the mentally ill, who should not be on the streets, to get the medical attention they desperately need. No child should have to live on the streets, and yet there are too many children who must suffer this injustice to the American dream on a daily basis. America's heroes, the veterans, also suffer this indignity of street life. These proud young boys who went to war to serve and protect our country have now been cast aside like trash by an uncaring society. Some veterans have mental illness, like Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, to physical illnesses like cancer, and some are missing limbs. This country needs to work on more low-income housing. More homes for the homeless, like Habitat for Humanity. This nation also needs more drug counseling and detoxification centers, to help those that are addicted to hard drugs like crack and heroin.

There are other factors that need to be addressed as well. Education is one of those factors. The education system in America has become so flawed that there are adults that, as teenagers, were just pushed through the system. Now that they are on their own, they did not learn anything in school, and now in a society where they must fend for themselves, are not even armed with the critical skills of reading, math, and writing. This is America, one of the richest countries on the planet, and as such, America needs to lead by example and take care of its citizens who cannot help them selves.

In this paper, the following questions will be looked at:(a)What are some of the main causes of homelessness?(b)How are the homeless in America treated?(c)What is being done to help the homeless?(d)How can this crisis be prevented in the future? The point of this paper is to show that with a little compassion and understanding, America can help its homeless today, and prevent it from happening for future generations.

While the country is in a recession and war, there are more homeless people in America today.

What are some of the main causes of homelessness? There are many different causes of homelessness in existence today. While we may never know all of the reasons, but we do know what the main causes are. Becoming homeless can happen to anyone in any walk of life. It does now matter whether you are rich or poor, black or white, young or old. Homelessness does not discriminate. Some of the main reasons for homeless are mental illness, natural disasters, an unstable economy, mass corporate layoffs, drug abuse and addiction, physical disabilities and disease.

A lot of states found it more cost effective to release the mentally ill onto the streets. These are people who need counseling and medication. People who need to be in a protected environment, for but yet they are released into a society that does not understand or have compassion for the situation.

While the last few years have seen growth in real wages at all levels, these increases have not been enough to counteract a long pattern of stagnant and declining wages. Low-wage workers have been particularly hard hit by wage trends and have been left behind as the...
