Homelessness is on the rise. In 1998 an estimate of between 500,000 and 600,000 people were homeless. By 1999 over 700,000 were estimated on a given night and up to two million people who experienced it during a year.
Homelessness doesn't mean to only sleep on the street and eat from trash cans. Many work at jobs but can't afford housing due to high rents and low wages. They sleep in their cars or shelters (National Law Center on Homeless and Poverty, via the National Coalition for the Homeless).
In my search for effective messages I came across a slide show I found to be well thought out. The slideshow accompanied by the song "It Ain't Pretty but its Beautiful" by Clay Walker is a good choice for the pictures shown. The pictures of the slideshow were placed appropriately with the words of the song. As I listened to the words I first felt sad. The idea of me and my children looking through trash cans for toys is enough to make me want to cry, but the attitude of the little girl who didn't want a new doll from this couple because "the broken one needed her more" made me realize that we really need to appreciate what we have and why God put us here, to love one another. The song is about a man driving home and saw a woman with two children searching through a trash can and the mom found a broken doll and gave it to her child. The man and his wife went back and found the family and took them shopping for clothes, food and toys, but the child did not want a new doll, the broken doll wasn't pretty or perfect but it was wonderful for the child. She said the broken doll needed her more than that of a new doll. This was my pathos... [continues]
