Assignment: Response to Mid-term Questions
Places Visited:
1. Keene Mansion
2. Lexington Cemetary
The Keene Mansion gave a glimpse into the past. It let us see and understand many aspects of a Kentuckian’s life during that time. I noticed that people were welcoming of guests and were very home and family oriented. The Keene Mansion was a place of growth. As time went on, the mansion changed. The Keene family added many rooms and other additions to accommodate the family and the times of changing arcitecture. The mansion seemed to be a place were people could come and enjoy themselves, knowing the Keene family would welcome them in their home. On the other side of town, the Lexington Cemetary was also very welcoming and family oreinted. The cemetary gave a strong familia vibe. As we had discussed in class, the male was head of house—and the grave, in this case. He literally was the centerpeice with his family surrounding him. Which is how a lot of people still view the man of the house. It is not a place that people would be afraid to visit because it also has a very welcoming vibe. It is not and would not have been a dark, scary cemetary. The paths, layout, and plant life make for a very friendly and inviting site.
The Keene Mansion is now a place of gatherence. It has been transformed into a place of commerce and we see how people can value the importance of a history home. Although the house is almost industrialized and modern, it still is left with many historic pieces. It says that people can respect an old home and a piece of history, but still use it for our changing needs. The cemetary also shows that people can preserve such a large part of history. We care that our children’s children can see things that have built what Kentucky is today. The cemetary is a perfect example of how we still value a space that holds symbols and tangible objects of how we came to be... [continues]
