History and The Moon is Down
The novel The Moon Is Down by John Steinbeck is all about the invasion of a little town by the Nazi's. It was many years since the town has fought a war, no one seemed to know how to act, especially the invaders. But, all in this entire novel proves that the invaders are human and only want to be liked. The reason they are not liked is because they are following orders from their leader. So, the townspeople start to plot against them and plan to win. Towards the end of the novel, Doctor Winter says "the flies have conquered the flypaper;" When Doctor Winter says this he means the flies, being the townspeople, have figured out a way to get around or off the flypaper once they are on, they are the true victors of the story.
First, the main thing the townspeople do to "conquer the flypaper" is they fight the Nazi's. One incidence was when Alexander Morden shot and killed one of the soldiers. Another incidence was when Molly Morden stabbed Tonder. "Slowly she raised the shears and placed them inside her dress1." When the packages were dropped the townspeople found them and hid them to fight back.
Second, the Anders brothers snuck out of the town and got the townspeople weapons and food, which is chocolate. "The Ander's boys are sailing for England. They've got to.2" Annie was telling Molly this in the story, so that they could use Molly's house as a sort of safe house. England then sent little packages to the town. "The tiny parachutes floated like thistledown and the breeze spread them out and distributed them as seeds on the ends of thistledown are distributed3." These little parachutes had some dynamite and a bit of chocolate in them. Townspeople found them and hid them, just so they had a fighting chance against the Nazi's.
Lastly, all the townspeople kept quiet and barely ever talked to the Nazi party. They kept their pride of their town. Loft and Hunter were talking, and Hunter asked what they said and Loft's response was "Say? What do they ever say?

Lord of the Flies by William Golding is a book about the slow decay of order within a society that cannot sustain itself. In the story a group of young british schoolboys find themselves on an island after their plane crashes. The reader does not know the exact time period that the story takes place in, or even if it is supposed to take place during a real world event, but it seems to either take place sometime around the second world war, the cold war, or some hypothetical third world war. Either way, it is fairly clear that some war is taking place during the period the book is taking place. The story begins with the group of boys having some semblance of a community and…

Day after day, the winter winds never seemed to stop. Tough times were ahead for the people along the Hudson Bay coast, and this brought fear and anxiety to every dwelling, including that of the Gores, whose friends and relatives already moved elsewhere.…

He illustrates wide knowledge and facts to explain how some of the information is faulty and how the world has benefited and still continues to benefit from our trips to the moon. Harlan also states the original writing dismissed too quickly the arguments from the oppose and describes that for the right reasons most of the population would agree with further endeavors to not only the moon but beyond. In Chocolat, I learned that food has magical power that engages and connects people and brings them into good relations. Vianne and her daughter were not welcomed in a conservative and religious town at beginning, however her chocolate had magical power to melt those peoples’ cold attitude and they became drawn into her chocolate, even that stubborn pastor Reynaud who had strong hostile feeling against Vianne did so at the end. I liked the part that Reynaud couldn’t resist to break in her store and try all the chocolates before Easter Sunday. “It is like one of my dreams. I roll in chocolates. I imagine myself in a field of chocolates, on a beach of chocolates, basking-rooting-gorging. I have no time to read the labels; I cram chocolates…

Golding stated, “’It was simply what seemed sensible for me to write after the war when everyone was thanking God they weren’t Nazis. I’d seen enough to realize that every single one of us could be Nazis.’” Lord of the Flies conveys an immense theme- without civilization the dangers of evil lurks inside of all of humanity. Golding communicates this clear message through the characters, events, and symbols in the novel to support his theme.…
