I would like to introduce to you today the concept of history and memory, and how these ideas can change from either individual to individual, or have a changing presence throughout time. History and memory are independent concepts, but largely rely on each other to interpret the full meaning behind a certain event. History can be anything that has helped shaped the world we live in today, and is generally based upon factual evidence and recordings. However, memories are the opinions created by each person and are normally subject to our own personal bias . The Smithsonian National Museum of American History September 11 Website is specifically designed to represent the historical artefacts that have been collected following the September 11 terrorists attacks in the year 2001. The Smithsonian National Museum of American History is largely funded by the American government itself, therefore, the displays and opinions shown within the museum represent those of the government, and are generally of an extremely patriotic nature. This is represented extremely well in my first article, which is a semi destroyed American flag recovered from the World Trade Center. This item represents the physical destruction that occurred as a result of the attacks, but as the flag is still intact, it is seen as a symbol of strength emerging from this catastrophe. The websites representation of this American flag suggests that it was one of most important symbols of hope and patriotism and allowed the entire American community to become reunited in the immediate aftermath and following years after the attacks occurred. This symbolism that is represented by the flying of the American flag is remembered by the site as a patriotic and noble gesture. However, it is fact that many American citizens refused to fly their flags or removed them from their houses in the aftermath of the attacks, as they were sceptical of the reasons that caused the attacks.
