“We talk more about sex than anything else” says Foucault, which is why I chose this topic. In this chapter I engaged in a lot of new information. And the same questions that were brought to Foucault have run through my mind many times before. For instance, ‘is pornography and sexual practices harmful to women? Does pornography limit women’s civil rights? Can a life of celibacy and chastity be a freeing option or does it deal with repression? Or to what extent for homosexuality constructed and to what extent was it “biological”? Were same-relations in early society understood as actions in which people chose or did they have a sense of themselves being homosexuality?’ All of these questions are valid questions that completely tie into sexuality. In the paper, I will elaborate on these questions.
In the chapter they defined sexuality as the constitution or life of an individual as related to sex. However, that is not the only definition. People a lot of time get the word gender and sexuality confused. As read in this chapter, the word gender is used to describe your sex as far as being a male, female, or transgender. To a certain extent it ties into sexuality however they are still different. Sexuality is more so the status of being homo or hetero and relations dealing with sex. Foucault argued that the history of sexuality in the West was not characterized the right way; it was transformed from sex to discourse. Unlike Foucault, I agree with this statement to a certain extent. Sex can be considered discourse now however in his time it what not. In the early eighteen and nineteen hundreds, words used to describe sexual activity were not heard of yet so therefore they were not able to express their feelings through words.
In many different places all over the world sexuality was determined in many ways. In some places it was based of the partner and in other it was based of the person itself. Sexuality is a broad word that has very different meanings. It can... [continues]
