The Health Insurance Portability And Accountability Act which means HIPAA for was passed in 1966. It has two parts: Title 1 and Title II. Title 1 offer insurance coverage for people who change careers or lose their jobs. Title II sets the security and privacy standards for how doctors, hospitals, health insurance companies, and employers who handle sensitive health information. The pros of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act is that it has a broader awareness on the importance of patient confidentiality to medical staff and persons associated with the patient information, it has an increase in the amount of the facilities that uses the EMR’s in their practices, and it makes the patient information more accessible for certain people that has privileges to access it. The cons of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability is that the secrecy laws have limited patients from contacting their friends and other medical associates, the institutionalization of the HIPAA technology within a facility has been financial straining and the violators of the HIPAA laws are not being prosecuted for their violations. The HIPAA also makes it harder for patients to receive comfort from their personal acquaintances and other medical professionals that need to know the basics of the patient information. The smaller businesses that are trying to keep their patient information confidential can be very expensive when they are trying to upgrade their technology to maintain the HIPAA. Yes, I believe that HIPAA is generally a good thing, because it protects the patient’s confidentiality, it helps to prevent medical fraud, insurance denials, and it also helps stop the abuse with health insurance. In order to improve and eliminate some of the negative aspects about HIPPA, I would make sure that the violators of the HIPPA be punished for the violation that they have done.
