Guidelines for Gowning and De-gowning

I. Gowning
1. Hand washing
– Follow the seven hand-washing steps, i.e. palm to palm; palm to dorsum; fingers interlaced; thumbs; backs of fingers; finger tips; and wrists – Dry both hands thoroughly with paper towels (without overusing)

2. Put on surgical mask
– Spread folds to cover nose, mouth and chin
– Fit flexible nose piece over nose bridge, secure on head with ties or elastic loops to ears – Mould to fit bilaterally and simultaneously

For N95 mask
– Cup the mask in one hand with the nosepiece at fingertips, allowing the head straps to hang freely below hand – Position the mask under your chin with the nosepiece up while holding the mask in place, pull the top strap over your head with the second hand so it rests high on the back of your head – Continue to hold the mask firmly in place, pull the bottom strap over your head and position it around your neck, below your ears. Ensure the mask covering your nose – Using both hands, mold the nose piece to the shape of your nose by pushing inward while moving your fingertips down both sides of the nosepiece – Perform fit check

o Place both hands completely over the mask, being careful not to alter the position o Exhale slowly. If air leaks around nose, adjust the nosepiece o If air leaks at mask edges, tighten the straps back along the sides of your head o Perform fit check again if any adjustment is made

3. Don goggles / eye-shield / face-shield
– Ensure the protective device is well fitted to the face and cover eye/face completely as needed – For face shield with head band, wear it after putting on the cap

4. Put on cap
– Ensure the cap is intact before putting it on
– Cover the head, ears and hair completely

5. Put on protective gown...
