HIMALA

"Walang himala!! Ang himala ay nasa puso ng tao, nasa puso nating lahat! Tayo ang gumagawa ng mga himala! Tayo ang gumagawa ng mga sumpa at ng mga diyos..."

Those were the famous lines from the even more famous movie “Himala”, whose main character, Elsa, was played by Nora Aunor. It was about a lass who claimed that she sees the Virgin Mary, she suddenly was able to cure the sick which caused frenzy in their small town. This film focuses on the issues of religious faith and faithlessness.

Last, November 8 2012, was my first time to watch the said movie. At first I was bored because, personally, I do not like watching old movies because, typically, the words are quite profound, the resolutions of the movies are quite poor and, sometimes, I dislike the plot itself. But as the movie went on, I came to like the movie because it showed a plot which I am not accustomed to. I haven’t seen a modern movie in my entire being which shows such plot, with such setting, because I don’t think movies like that sells so the people anymore. Also, I think the movie shows how different people think from that time to the people today. That people from that time were easily convinced of what was happening to their environment, even without looking for evidence, especially, when it comes to religion, and what parts them from the people today is that, you must show them a lot of proof, first before they believe you. Another thing I noticed is how people then give much importance to religion but it was shown in the movie how faithless those people were because of how they worshiped the character of Elsa.

One of my favorite parts is when Chayong hanged herself because she was not able to cope with the shame and anxiety anymore after she and Elsa was sexually assaulted by two men, especially because she felt filthy and disillusioned realizing that the character of Elsa wasn’t able to help her even if she was a faithful apostle to Elsa, believing that she was possessed by the Virgin Mary. Another scene, is when Elsa confessed that she had no sighting of the Virgin Mary and when she delivered the famous lines. I made me mad; to think that she was just imagining all those stuff which caused hysteria to the people, which made those people worship her more than the Virgin Mary herself, to think that, her, being delusional, had caused the death of many people including one of her best friends, it also caused the closing of the business of another friend of hers because the people believed in Elsa so much that they would do anything she says.

To sum this all up, I really liked the movie. It strengthened my views about religion, and I had a well-spent afternoon. HIMALA
