In what ways do composers use images to portray people, places and ideas in your text? In your response, refer to your prescribed text, and two other related texts. Composers use images to convey people, places and ideas. Composers create a distinct visual in our minds through these images in order to portray universal issues to the audience. The short stories “The Drover’s Wife” (referred to as TDW) and “The Loaded Dog” (referred to as TLD) by Henry Lawson convey the notion of how harsh the Australian Outback can be and of how individuals will strive to protect themselves and others around them. The paintings “The Drover’s Wife” by Russell Drysdale and “Bungaree” convey the notion of how individuals need to adapt to their environment in order to survive and how harsh conditions Australia was during the 20th century and the English colonization. Through the use of characterization, setting development and several literary techniques Henry Lawson portrays the notions of how harsh the Australian Outback can be and how an individual do almost anything to protect their beloved ones which is conveyed constantly throughout TDW and TLD. Lawson uses the short story, “The Drover’s Wife”, to convey the images of people, ideas and places through which portray the notions of how harsh the Australian Outback can be and of how individuals will strive to protect themselves and others around them. Lawson uses anecdotal evidence in TDW, “She thinks how she fought a flood during her husband’s absence … but a woman’s cunning is greater”. In this quote the drover’s wife is explored as a tough, stoic woman through the use of emotive language. Lawson uses listing here of the experiences she faced to make the audience empathize how she struggled through the tough situations in order to protect her family.
