Analytical Piece
The analytical piece of this portfolio would be on the poem “The Big Gun”. It gives the thoughts of a certain person who has experienced the volcanic activity on the island. The poem portrays the destruction of the Soufriere Hills Volcano while comparing it to the perniciousness of a shot gun.
The two main registers which are employed within this poem are the casual and intimate registers. The narrator in the poem is apparently describing the events to a younger person with whom they are apparently. This is evident as the person uses mainly basilect and mesolect when explaining to the listener which leads us to believe that there is some form of intimacy involved E.g. “Dis gun would never shoot no one slug
It just explodes and covers the whole place with mud”
There are various occasions of code switching and dialect variation that are illustrated within this piece which are used to show different attitudes throughout.
E.g. “With all de damage done it never move it position
But it some how managed to destroy half of an island”
There are certain phrases that are used to shock and instill fear within the reader which portrait the attitude to language.
e.g. “Them bullet here nuh only burn skin
It sends out pyroclastic flow that burns bone, marrow, blood cell and everything”
This change in register is used in an effort to bring the seriousness of the situation and try and move away from the figurative meaning of the poem and to also avoid any misunderstanding that may occur by the use of the basilect or intimate register.
e.g. “This gun has no relation to the Uzi, Mack 90 neither the... [continues]
