Many types relationships can develop between people. Relationships can be very simple, others may be complicated, some are healthy, while others may be unhealthy. Relationship can be separated into negative relationships and positive relationships. An example of a negative relationship can be found in Shakespeare’s play, “Romeo and Juliet”. Although relationships can be negative and positive, the relationship between Juliet and her father falls short of the qualities of a strong relationship. A strong relationship requires support, communication and, equality. Juliet and her father’s absence of these traits eventually caused the downfall of their relationship, and finally Juliet’s death.

It's not just in harsh times that families should support each other. In a healthy relationship, a family member is there with a shoulder to cry on when things go wrong, or to celebrate together when good news come. Juliet and her father’s relationship has a lack of support. This is shown when Capulet forces Juliet to marry Paris, despite her being in love with Romeo. Her father shows complete ignorance for her decision, and tells her to marry Paris or he will never speak to her again. “Get thee to church a’thursday,, or never after look me in the face.” (pg. 115) Likewise, Juliet fails to support her father. She knows she is the only child, and is the only chance of continuing the Capulet family name, so she lies to her father when she agrees to marry paris, which causes him to waste precious time and commitment. Another instance is when Juliet tells her mother she will become acquainted with Paris, but she doesn’t make much effort to do so. Again, their relationship is difficult and uneasy as a consequence of the absence of support for each other throughout the play.
