With the intention of implementing an increase in patient health, measurable by shorter hospitalizations and improved adherence to medical regimens, the Health Psychology Committee is in the process of trying to initiate a psychiatry division that will employ five psychologists. By implementing the division, the patients will be able to treat from a different perspective and in a more efficient way, which is pertinent in patient health.
Along with the stress that affects a person when it comes to having any illness, which can affect behavioral responses and immune functioning by changes in the body’s physical systems, the role of psychology appears to be in demand when providing patient care. (Sarafino, 2006) With the incorporation of psychology into health care, the patient would experience a reduction in stress, which will result in an increase in their overall health, shorter hospitalizations, and increased patient compliance with treatment plans. Psychologists also have the ability to equip their patients with life skills to adapt to their illness, as well as effective coping strategies.
The five psychologists that will be in the psychiatry division will be a substance abuse counselor, impatient-only psychologist, child psychologist, adult psychologist, and pain management specialist. Different responsibilities will be assigned to each psychologist according to their role. Along with their specific responsibilities, all the psychologists will also have the duties of ensuring that they see each patient to make sure their needs are met and having monthly meetings to discuss patient management plans, assess patient progress, and construct new proposals to continue the progress of each patient’s health.
