The course description for Health Policy states that this course is designed to focus on the main issues of health policy that are effecting our society today. This class also focuses on presenting the viewpoints that sociologists, economists, political scientists, and health experts have on these main issues regarding health policy. The viewpoints from these well-educated experts are sometimes hard to understand but are completely necessary when it comes to communicating with public policy makers. This course has four main key points of focus. First this course helps students understand the basics about health policy and the political process involved. Secondly, this course looks at the overall health status of the US and teaches students about the health disparities that are apparent in our society today. Next, this course shows students how there are changes occurring in our health care delivery system right now. Lastly, this course shows students how economics drives our entire health care system. Throughout the semester there were threaded discussions, a special action report and assignments that focused on teaching students about the health care system and what changes can and need to be made in order to improve the system.
This course has taught me some invaluable lessons the importance of understanding the health care system and understanding health policy. One of the most important things that I have been taught by this class is that there needs to be a change made in our health care system. As a country we spend 2x more money on healthcare than any other country and yet our healthcare system ranks 37th in the world. These big hospitals and corporations are focusing more on making themselves money then providing better and cheaper care to the citizens of the US.
