HealthCare Roles in Communication

For my final project I will put into action the communication skills I learned taking this class. Communication is an important key role between patient and care giver. Health communication is important to individuals, organizations, and society overall. It is crucial to meeting medical goals, enhancing personal well-being, saving time and money and making the most of health information (McGraw-Hill 2005). When there are good communication skills between patient and caregiver the healthcare encounters can be positive outcomes. If a patient feels comfortable discussing his/her situation with his caregiver it is more likely that the patient will follow the care givers instructions. Dawn A. Marcus from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (2009) states, “Accurate and open communication is the beginning of good medical care.”
Many theorists consider that the best communicators are sensitive to other people’s feelings and expectations. Sensitivity enhances health communication on many levels. Research shows that public health campaigns are most effective when they are designed with the audience’s concerns and resources in mind ( Murray-Johnson & Witte, 2003).
For my final project the scenario that I have chosen is scenario #2-Vivian.
Vivian is a woman who has been experiencing abdominal pains. After starting a new job and receiving medical insurance Vivian has decided to go to the doctor about her abdominal pains. As Vivian arrives at the doctor’s office she notices that the office does not feel welcoming. The office has simple interior design with only two notes hanging on the walls. One sign states to turn off cell phone while the other states to have co-pay ready. As she tries to talk to someone at the front desk about her abdominal pain she is quickly interrupted and asked to return to her sit.
