To Universalize or not to Universalize?
“Universal health care is implemented in all industrialized countries, with the exception of the United States. It is also provided in many developing countries” (World lingo). When people or countries acts against the general understanding, there is often a cause reason to further question this action. The actions of the United States on health care are not the exception. As the only industrialized nation without universal health care, it is important to understand why the United States has not followed suit so that an appropriate course of action can be taken (World lingo). Although health care has been a topic of heated political discussion for almost 20 years, almost no changes were made to the system (World lingo). Throughout this time a prevalence of evidence continually shows that for many reasons, a universal health care system would be a significant improvement over the current system in place.
The first major issue with establishing a universal health care system is the high cost people associate with such legislature, but this is not the case (“Connecticut”). The recent health care bill proposed in the house has an estimated cost of about a trillion dollars (“Absolute Astronomy”). Although this sounds very expensive, and gathers criticism, compared to the total cost of health care it is inexpensive.   Currently, health care spending in the United States is well over double that and comprise 16 percent of the total gross national product of the country(“World lingo”).   Economically, it makes sense that universal health care would reduce costs, and thus benefit citizens and be cheaper than privatized insurance.
