The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (PPACA), includes expansion of mental health services available and accessible in the community. * Effective community mental health care is imperative and crucial to promote and maintain mental health in the community and to the society as a whole. * It aims to prevent the occurrence of debilitating and unstable conditions due to limited care. RECOMMENDATIONS:
* The need for evidence-based practice in psychiatric and mental health nursing in three major areas: * Personnel (researchers and clinicians)
* Process (conduct and dissemination of evidence-based research) * Product (change in practice based on evidence)
* Extend mental health services in medical homes and community health centers. * Education in the need to understand mental illness as a medical condition to promote the reversal of social exclusion, discrimination and social isolation which result in stigma. * Further research on treatment goals of mental illness geared towards remission and enhancement of availability and access.
