Obesity
Obesity is a disease that is becoming an epidemic in the United States. Currently, more than half of the population in the United States that is considered obese. There are many factors of obesity that can be controlled. There are also factors in which the person has no control over, such as another form of illness. Luckily there are many forms of treatment that have been around since the early 1900s. Many communities have adapted programs to help promote healthy lifestyles and prevent obesity from spreading. Like any disease, public information is essential in controlling the obesity epidemic. For this reason, Stanislaus County has adopted its own program to help prevent obesity and promote a more nutritious lifestyle. This program helps inform the community on how to eat healthy by making fresh produce more available. There are however, a few changes that I would make to this program. More advertising would make it a bit easier for the community to find more information on how to seek help if so they needed to.
Obesity is a disease that affects 60 percent of Americans in the United States. In 2007 the Center for Disease Control and Prevention conducted a survey regarding obesity in the United States and found alarming results. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention website, obesity in the Black-American community had a 51 percent higher prevalence of obesity and Hispanics had 21 percent higher obesity prevalence compared with Whites. Sections in the Southeast such as the Appalachian or the tribal lands in the west and Northern plains, have the nation's highest rate of obesity. In some of that region’s counties, the rates of diagnosed obesity are above 30 percent. In 2009, the same survey was conducted and was found that there are thirty-three states where 25 percent of the population obese.
