Patient Compliance Scenarios

Scenario 1—Asthma

What patient compliance issues are evident in this scenario?
The mother did not fill the prescriptions that Dr. Ward prescribe for Carolyn and is not going to contact Dr. Ward to answer any further questions.

What communication problems are contributing to the patient’s lack of compliance?
The mother was not fully informed about the medications and the possible complications that could be cause be not using them correctly. She did not feel as if she had been heard and did not want to give her child medications that she was not fully informed about.

Dr. Ward failed to be attentive and respectful he did not fully answer all of the mother’s questions. The mother stated that she did not understand and had her concerns dismissed by the doctor. The mother may have had concerns about side effects or the safety of the drug interactions with other prescriptions that Carolyn is already taking.

How might the caregiver improve communication in a way that would promote patient compliance?
A provider should not take calls during an exam. He should have finished answering the mother’s questions and then returned the call after she was gone.

Scenario 2—The Dentist

What patient compliance issues are evident in this scenario?
Eden is not practicing good oral hygiene, she has not followed her dentist’s orders to use a water pick to remove the plaque buildup. However, she is returning every three months for a cleaning.

What communication problems are contributing to the patient’s lack of compliance?
Eden does not feel as if her problems or concerns matter to her dentist. The dentist wants Eden to clean her teeth properly in order to maintain good oral hygiene.
