Happy vs. Unhappy Endings
From my point of view, the endings always make a big difference between the top movies and the bottom ones. And by saying this, I’m also referring to the endings of the following movies: ‘Annie Hall’ directed by Woody Allen and ‘Mississippi Masala’ directed by Mira Nair.
The first movie is a comedy and illustrates the romantic relationship between neurotic Alvy Singer and ditsy Annie Hall. The film follows their relationship from the first meeting to their break up. Alvy Singer, a New York comedian, falls in love with Annie, a talented singer and photographer. Even if they are completely different, both are weird and entertaining.
In the other hand, the second movie shows the story of an Indian family, expelled from Uganda, and trying to familiarize themselves with the new surroundings when they moved to Greenwood, Mississippi: Jay, Kinnu and their daughter, Meena, She meets Demetrius Williams and they fall in love, but the situation is not that simple. He is a “kaalu” (black man) and Jay, Meena’s father has a real shock when he finds out and he doesn’t accept this. There is a difference between the two movies: if the first couple including Annie and Alvy were free to succeed in their relationship, the second couple is deprived of this liberty, being judged by everyone around because of the cultural and racial differences.
Even if ‘Annie Hall’ is a comedy film, it doesn’t have a happy ending. Approaching reality, Annie and Alvy break up in the end of the movie. Altough they had beautiful moments together by loving each other, their relationship it was not perfect, having lacks, flaws. Once again, closer to the reality, we see the main idea in the end of the film: love fades and people break up but that does not mean that we should stop loving or we should not value what we once had.
