The McDonald’s Happy Meal
McDonalds clears around 30 billion dollars of annual revenue (Royle 165). The golden arch fast food giant has been around since the fifties and their restaurants now span across multiple continents including Europe and Asia. Almost every young American has had a Happy Meal at some point in their lives. Fast food is a growing epidemic with McDonald’s leading the pack among places to go for a hunger quick fix. Are Happy meals really that happy? Think twice before your next trip down happy meal lane.
The Happy Meal typically comes with a hamburger or cheeseburger. You can Substitute beef for chicken, and order the meal with a four or six piece chicken nugget. The side order is fries or apple fries. The drink is a choice of milk, chocolate milk, or apple juice. Happy Meals average around 500 calories, 25 grams of fat, and 900 milligrams of sodium depending on the choice of meal. Although this is only about one third of the recommended daily calorie intake, it is far from what experts would say is healthy. McDonalds has given the meal several nutritional upgrades through the years after relentless pressure from children advocacy groups to make them better.
