THE USES OF ARTICLES IN ENGLISH NOUN PHRASE

ABSTRACT

Noun phrase plays an important role in the construction of a sentence. Lacking knowledge of noun phrase in English, learners could not make understandable sentences. And, it is almost inadequate to discuss the noun phrase without referring at some stage to the class of words known as determiners. This paper, therefore, aims to research on the articles, the most common type of determiners, to examine and report their uses with other determiners in English noun phrase.

THE USES OF THE ARTICLES WITH OTHER DETERMINERS IN ENGLISH NOUN PHRASE

I.INTRODUCTION
“Noun rarely stand alone, they are usually accompanied by modifiers. The most common noun modifier in English is determiners” (Berk, 1990, p.89). And the most typical sort of determiners is articles. In both English grammar and English communication, article is one of the most essential elements of forming a noun phrase. Most native speakers of English use articles correctly without considering it, but it can become more confusing when learning English as a foreign language. Therefore, in studying and communicating English, learners always feel confused in how to use articles correctly. Articles also are an familiar title with students, however, the uses of articles are quite complex and not easy to master. This paper will partially help learners understand more clearly in order to avoid making mistakes in studying generally and in forming noun phrases particularly.

II.PROCEDURE
In researching process, I used some following methods: * Collecting information and details from the Internet.
* Finding documents from libraries.
* Asking for advice from teachers and friends.

III.FINDINGS AND ANALYSIS
1.Overview
First of all, to understand about articles in English noun phrase, learners need to know “ What is an article ? ’’. An article is a member of a small class of determiners that identify a noun. It also is a kind of adjective that occupies the first position in the noun phrase. And like other adjectives, they help clarify the meaning of the noun in a sentence. Article is classified in terms of definiteness into two types: the definite article (the) and the indefinite articles (a and an). The only definite article in English is the word “the”, denoting person(s) or thing(s) already mentioned, under discussion, implied, or otherwise presumed familiar to the listener or reader. It is often used as the very first part of a noun phrase. Berry stated, “ “The” is the commonest specific determiners, it is sometimes called the definite article” (1993, p.43), and in term of linguistics, Zandvoort wrote, “the definite article, written “the”, is /ði/ before vowel sounds, /ðə/ (in rapid speech /ð/) in other case” (1975, p.117). “The” can combine with singular, plural countable, and uncountable nouns. Here is some examples for a noun phrase that has the definite article “the” : * The yellow ball.

* The walking dead.
The indefinite article in English is the word “a” and “an”. The difference between definite article and indefinite article is that the definite article is used when referring to a specific person, place, idea, or thing, i.e. a noun, but the indefinite article is used when referring to a noun in the more board and general sense. To understand in a simply way, the indefinite article is combined with count nouns when both the speaker and the hearer/reader...
