There are both many similarities and differences when comparing and contrasting Shakespeare's play Hamlet versus Franco Zefferelli's film version. The most obvious difference between the two is that they are different mediums, one is written and one is visual. People can have varied perceptions from what you thought the appearances and mannerisms of the characters to be while reading the text then when you see them on the screen. Hamlet appeared to be much older in the film than Ophelia, who looked about the age she was intended to be in the play. Gertrude is perceived to be mature and calm in the play, while in the film she is giddy and acts like a young girl. While the play and film are similar in that the movie uses the original old English…

After reading “Hamlet,” I watched two movies of the same script but are directed by different people. At first I thought the older the movie, the more the movie would fit the play, as in being more traditional into following everything in the book compared to how movies today are altered in a more modern sense. I watched Hamlet 1990, directed by Kevin Kline, there are so many lines dropped and added in to the play that I could not really make sense of how Claudius is really feeling. Claudius seems very arrogant because of the way he is responding to a threat that is given from Young Fortinbras. I also watched Hamlet 2009, directed by Gregory Doran, where it shows a lot more facial expression and emotions that suits the characters that are played in this movie. Hamlet shows a lot of pain and anger as he speaks towards Claudius or to anyone of the matter. In I, II, Doran’s version shows a lot more emotions that is expressed through each character and also the Hamlet in this movie shows that he really has a hatred towards Claudius whereas in the other film directed by Kline, Hamlet hides his feelings from Claudius. The setting, acting, and script of the film directed by Doran are more suitable for the play than the film that was directed by Kline because of the way the directors had the characters present themselves.…

In 1601, William Shakespeare wrote the tragedy Hamlet. Hamlet is a young prince whose father has recently died and his uncle, Claudius, has wooed his widowed mother, Gertrude, and taken Hamlet’s place on the throne. Not only is Hamlet angry because Claudius married his mother and has taken his throne, Hamlet recently found out Claudius was the reason for his father’s death. Hamlet wants to achieve revenge his father and get what is rightfully his; the throne of Denmark. In Disney’s 1994 The Lion King, Simba is a young lion cub whose father, Mufasa, is king. Scar, Simba’s uncle, wants to be king and he wounds up killing his brother. Scar makes Simba believe he is the reason for his father’s death and Simba runs away. As Simba reaches adulthood, he is found by a childhood friend, Nala, who convinces him to go home and become king. Simba also has the same problem as Prince Hamlet; Simba’s uncle has killed his father as well and Simba wants to avenge Mufasa’s death. While composing The Lion King, Disney writers chose a very similar framework to Hamlet because, although its Oedipal themes are rather mature, they still resonate strongly with young readers.…

In William Shakespeare Hamlet and Othello, the author creates two similar yet vastly different protagonists. The major source of contrast lies within each characters approach to decision making and premeditated action. As David Nichol Smith puts it, Hamlet “is not a character marked by strength of will or even passion, but by refinement of thought and sentiment.”(Smith 288) This very refinement of thought is what characterizes both Hamlet’s indecision and forces him to act when he renounces indecision. In contrast…

Many people would agree that family is the most important thing in life. We rely on them and they rely on us. The bond that forms from that is unbreakable. Hamlet and the lion king both focus on why you could betray family and what happens when you do. Even though the lion king is Disney's interpretation of Shakespeare's Hamlet there are some key differences in the plot. The openings of the plays show the characters of Hamlet and Macbeth to be incredibly dissimilar. Hamlet appears discouraged with life; he comes across very melancholy and theatrical. At the beginning of the play, Hamlet’s father, King Hamlet, has recently died, and his mother, Queen Gertrude, has married the new king, Hamlet’s uncle Claudius. Hamlet is dejected, astringent, and sceptical, full of hatred for his uncle and disgust at his mother for marrying him. This is very contradictory to the first portrayal of Macbeth. At the begging of the play, Macbeth is shows as an energized, forceful, and premeditated warrior. He is seen as the bravest of them all and faithful to his King Duncan. He does not have any hatred to his king, but pure adulation and reverence, unlike Hamlet, who has very bitter feelings for King Claudius.…
