Act I
DECAY AND CORRUPTION. (Hamlet) “O, that this too too sullied flesh would melt,/ Thaw, and resolve itself into a dew!/or that the everlasting had not fixed /His canon ‘gainst self-slaughter! Oh God, God,/How weary, stale, flat, and unprofitable /seem to me all the uses of this world!” (1,2,Lines 129-134.) Clearly this soliloquy shows how hamlets is distressed . His Desire for his “ flesh” to “melt” and dissolve into “dew” registers his grief over the death of his father and his mother’s remarriage to his uncle. His thoughts here are suicidal and show some mental and emotional instability . In previous context we are informed that Hamlet had been in a “ melancholy” mood. This shows just how greatly this arrangement ,with his uncle and mother , have affected him. In later text Hamlet repeatedly states how his mother was so weak that within “a month” she had fallen for his father’s brother. Hamlets constant sruggle over how to deal with his pain creates for the whole drama of the play. To be seen in later acts. INSANITY- (Hamlet) –“ How strange or odd soe’er I bear myself-/ as I perchance hereafter shall think meet/ To put an antic disposition on.” (1,179-181) After hamlets encounter with the ghost , he begins to plan his next steps. He informs his friends that he will put on an “ antic disposition”. Basically hamlet Is going to act like a madman. As the play progresses and hamlet puts on his “act” the audience begins to questions hamlets sanity as a whole. Is this really an act? Has he become to drowned in his emotions that he has lost himself? A constant question

DECAY AND CORRUPTION- (Marcellus)-“ Something Is rotten in the state of Denmark”(1,iV,90) This quote spoken by Marcellus to Horatio, was said after the ghost had appeared before them. They were contemplating whether or not to follow him and Hamlet into the woods. It is clear to them that something is not right. The ghost is a symbol for the “rottenness” in Denmark created by Claudiu’s Act of killing the King .

REVENGE- (Hamelt) “O, what a rogue and peasant slave am I!/Is it not monstrous that this player here,/But in a fiction, in a dream of passion,/ Could force his soul so to his own conceit/That from her working all his visage wann’d ,/Tears in his eyes ,distraction in’s aspect,/a broken voice, and his whole function suiting /With forms to his conceit? And all for nothing!/For Hecuba!/What’s Hecuba to him, or he to Hecuba,/That he should weep for her? What would he do,/Had he the motive and the cue for passion/ That I have?[…..]/O,vengeance!/ Why, what an ass am I ! 2,2, LINES 477- 489, 509-510 This soliloquy Shows how flustered Hamlet becomes after watching a performance of one of the traveling players. He reprimands himself for his inability to take action against his father’s murderer , something that is real. And then to watch an actor “ weep “ for a fictional character “Hecuba”. He wonders why he can’t get himself to do what he must to take revenge. He tries to place himself in the actors position , and seeing what he would do “ Had he the motive and the cue for passion” Hamlet knows now that he must “play “ a role to will himself to kill Claudius. This shows how the suspense begins to build up as Hamlet sets out to finish the job. REVENGE/SANITY AND INSANITY - (Hamlet) “The spirit that I have seen / May be the devil, and the devil hath power/T’ assume a pleasing shape; yea, and perhaps,/ out of my weakness and my melancholy,/As he is very potent with such spirits,/Abuses me to damn me. I’ll have grounds/ More relative than this. The play’s the thing/Wherein I’ll catch the conscience of the king.” 2,2,Lines 526-533. This speech shows how Hamlet tampers with the possibility that the ghost may be and evil spirit. Hamlets “..weakness and ..melancholy..” leave him vulnerable to be led astray. Hamlet is aware of this and devises a plan in order to find the truth in his father’s death. Hamlet decides to use the traveling actors as a...
