Hamlet Essay

Despite the fact that Hamlet is dated to be around 400 years old or more, there are plenty of themes that still ring true to our society today. This becomes clear when a beautiful piece of writing survives this long, and motifs such as the ones present in Hamlet are present in modern works such as songs, movies, and more. However, Hamlet is more than just a story of a young man who lost his father and seeks revenge. You must read between the lines to see the true, deep, and raw feelings that all the characters experience. In Hamlet and more modern texts, you can see the presence of misogyny, madness, and the complexity of action.
Throughout the play, Hamlet drops his delicate hints on how he views women. He even states, “Frailty, thy name is woman!” (I.II.146.). Given that his mother did partake in marrying his uncle just months after his true fathers death, this statement is almost deserved. Hamlet is stating that women are weak, but it does take a very weak and lustful woman to marry her husband’s brother. Furthermore, this subject is also present in the motion picture, The Hangover, when Stu, played by Ed Helms, becomes hyperaware that he has married a woman (which happens to be an exotic dancer) after only knowing her for one night. He is so disgusted with himself that he blurts out, “I married a wh-!” (The Hangover). This reflects how women are looked down upon due to empty-headed decisions that take two people to finalize. Hamlet fails to mention that his uncle is weak, or frail, he immediately places blame on women, just as Stu does upon discovering his own mishap. People like to take the easy scapegoat, such as women, when placing blame, versus taking the whole issue into account.
