Hamlets True Intensions In the play Hamlet it is obvious that there is a story about a boy who lost his father, but the main climax comes from how he takes his revenge. Hamlet theoretically could have received evidence of his father’s death by different means but did so by revealing his madness to others. Hamlet sees more benefit by pretending he is mad as he can take revenge and there are less suspicions of the killing. Hamlet is only feigning madness at this point of the play for simple and successful vengeance as he uses several action, his own words and others opinions to find answers. While Hamlet is acting mad, he can use this to buy him some precious time. Hamlet can act as if he is insane while he continuous to gather as much evidence as he can to show the guiltiness of Claudius. While pretending to be mad Hamlet has a slight advantage because of Gertrude’s and Claudius thought of Hamlets mental wellbeing after his father had died. Hamlet while masked in madness determines who truly his companion is and who is not. While doing so he sorts out the weak from the strong determining how to take his exact revenge. Hamlet does not take murdering well for a revengeful act so his mad act provide himself with a genius way to cover while he figures out how to seek revenge. In the act of madness, he listens to the words carried out by others very carefully. He believes that if people think he is mad, due to his sorrow over his father’s demise, then he can slip into other conversations masked as if he can hear others secretes and listen to the truth. Some people such as Hamlets fake father and untrustworthy mother do not take into account that Hamlet still is who he was before. As such, Hamlet takes in control by asking questions to his mother and Claudius, trying to grab out information, and they always make comments such as, “Ah, he is mad!” or “Ah, he is troubled, depressed”. The only proof that Hamlet has that it was Claudius that murdered his father are the whispers of the ghost. This makes him hesitate while he carries his vengeance so he as proof which no one could believe in, so he must be sure. One of the benefits of being masked by madness is the illusion people cannot see so they talk freely and say things that are not meant to be said. This is in fact an illusion because Hamlet mentions the madness be an act to Horatio as he said, “I am but mad-north-north-west, when the wind is southerly I know a hawk from a handsaw” (Act 2 Scene 2 Lines 378-379). Hamlet convinces the people around him to believe he is mad; one of the characters who got tricked was Polonius. He thought Hamlet was mad because Ophelia had been rejecting all of the letters Hamlet had sent. Hamlet maps his way around his next scheme as he already makes the others believe he is insane from many personal experiences which strengthen his resolve. There is an old saying, “Don’t believe everything you see” which does not get followed by any of Hamlets friends or foes. Hamlet just covers his face with the mask of madness because he wants to find answers and proof of who actually killed his father. In order to find his missing piece, he must confuse others to make himself look more innocent as he secretly keeps getting closer. In conclusion, Hamlet acts mad so other will speak freely in front of him, people will not take him seriously as his enemy unwisely leaves loose ends.
