Haier – Taking a Chinese Company Global in 2011

Haier is a Chinese consumer electronics company with its headquarters in Quingdao, Shandong, China. They were once the largest home appliance maker in China and started their business in the year 1984. In 2010, they were called one of the most innovative firms of the Business Weeks magazine. Their products are air conditioners, mobile phones, washing machines, refrigerators and televisions.
The CEO of Haier, Zhang Ruimin, wanted to create a well-known brand with high-quality products. Therfore, they started a cooperation agreement with the German manufacturer Liebherr. To improve the technology and the design Haier constituted joint ventures with Mitsubishi and Merloni. In 1989, they already had a revenue of RMB 410 million. In order to differentiate from their competitors they built a computerized center for satisfying their customers. It helps to create value and commitment to the brand. Another strategy to rise above the competition was diversification. After Leadership in refrigerators they introduced air conditioners and freezers. For this reason, Haier acquired the company Quingdao. Over a period of 15 years from 1990-2004 there were following 15 more companies. The concept was to select only those companies with good products but bad management. That’s was one way to be successful.
In the early 1990s, Haier started its business outside of China. At first they entered the markets in Germany and the United Kingdom as a contract manufacturer for multinational brands. But after beating Liebherr in a blind quality test for refrigerators, they started their business with the own brand. The aim was to establish brand reputation. Haier started in America in 1994. Because of being a small company, compared to the US companies, they entered the market with niche products, like a compact refrigerator. They just wanted to avoid a competition with the big players in the United States. As recently as Haier

    Case Study Of Haiier

Haier’s biggest strategy flaw is how the executives believe that focusing on niche markets would allow the brand to introduce a full line of products in international market. When Haier first enters the U.S. market, they instantly realize that there is a need for competitive refrigerators, however no manufactures were making them due to the low volume and price. Haier has the experience of making smaller washing machines for people who live in the big city with smaller living spaces. So Haier decided to take the share of niche market and use it as their first strategy for the new North America market. It allowed Haier to get the attention of the major retail chains like Home Depot, Best Buy, Office Depot and even Wal-Mart. It also avoids face-to-face market war with big local brands. Beginning with niche products is a good strategy if niche market share is all Haier wants. It is confusing how Haier decide it is right to go to the most competitive market like North America first, but choose to avoid head-on competition with big names like GE, Whirlpool, Maytag and Frigidaire. Haier don’t look to compete with big names, since they are much bigger than Haier locally. And said by Jemal from Haier, there is…

The good quality is one of the most important reasons for the success of Haier. At the same time, Mr. Zhang got the support from government, so he got the loan from the bank easily. Before Haier went first IPO in China, Mr. Zhang got about 17 millions RMB loan from bank. And for improving the quality of product, he used more than two millions RMB to buy the full production technology of refrigerator from a Germen company. Haier also used the local resource and cheap labor, used the lowest cost to produce the product with highest quality in China.…

Before we address the problem, we should take a review of what strategies have made Haier such a success. Haier insisted on its high quality products sold at a premium while others are pursuing low price. This strategy is applicable in both China and overseas and has gained Haier great brand reputation. Haier’s process, as stated in the case, is to observe and digest first, and then imitate and finally it can understand and design independently. Also, its differentiation strategy helped the company a lot in success. It once focused on a separate position which is mini machines overseas and resulted in a success. This can be compared to the Honda case illustrated in class when this company first got into America. Haier is an expert at acquisition as well. It knows how to acquire companies with good products but bad management and apply its own managing skills which can turn the company to profitable very quickly. Other crucial factors contribute to Haier’s success include its sufficient customer services and strategy of setting up multinational brand abroad instead of simply exporting in China. These not only boost Haier’s profit but also gain Haier good reputation.…

Haier had been founded as Qingdao Refrigerator Co. in 1984. With China opening up to world markets, foreign corporations began searching for partnerships in China. One of these, Germany's refrigerator company Liebherr entered into a joint-venture contract with Qingdao Refrigerator Co., offering technology and equipment to its Chinese counterpart. Refrigerators were to be manufactured under the name of Qindao-Liebherr (simplified Chinese: 琴岛—利勃海尔; traditional Chinese: 琴島-利勃海爾; pinyin: Qindao-Libohaier). The installation of Liebherr's equipment and technology was accompanied by new quality management processes. By 1986, Qingdao Refrigerator had returned to profitability and sales growth averaged 83 percent per year. With sales of just CNY ¥3.5 million in 1984, sales rocketed to CNY ¥40.5 billion by 2000; a growth of more than 11,500 percent.[2]…
