Our nation is reeling after having suffered the second deadliest school shooting in the history of the United States last month in Newton, Connecticut. This has forced our country to change the current gun policy, in order to prevent a similar situation in the future. The question, however, is how do we do it?
Recently President Obama unveiled his answer on how we, as a nation, can reduce the massive gun violence. His initiative focuses on four significant areas: background checks, banning assault weapons, school safety and mental health services. These proposals are legislative proposals that would have to be reviewed by Congress, but also actions Obama can implement himself. One of president Obamas top priorities is background check for all gun sales, as dangerous individuals too easily have access to firearms. According to the US justice department, up to 40 % of gun sales are done without background check. The President therefore want to strengthen the criminal background checks, to keep guns from those who would commit acts of violence. To make this possible, it would have to pass through Congress. Furthermore Mr. Obama proposed a banning of assault weapons, as well as high-capacity magazines, as a 2010 survey by the Police reported an increase in criminals’ use of assault weapons and large ammunition magazines. The purpose of this request is to protect law enforcement and enhance public safety. In addition a limitation of magazine sizes, could help decrease fatalities in case of mass shootings. A prohibition on assault weapons and magazines are highly prioritized, but would require congressional approval as well. Moreover, the gun control proposal suggested an improvement of mental heath services and information sharing. The president wants to make access to mental health care as easy as the access to firearms.
