There are a countless number of things in life that can cause one stress, whether it’s a struggle at work, or a strain on your relationship. While going through these types of difficulties it is important for someone to be able to overcome these feelings of anxiety or distress. This is where meditation and relaxation come in. Although these two things are related, there is a difference between them. Meditation is used to go further than just the thinking mind and end in a more knowing state of consciousness. It is used to focus on one thought that could then lead to a boundless frame of mind. Relaxation on the other hand, is used more to not have to think about anything. It is so the person does not have to think about a thing and be able to escape from their daily worries.…

As mentioned earlier, stress affects not only an individual, but everyone around them. That is why meditating in a community setting is so beneficial. As Augustine once said, "Friendship among men, too, is a delightful bond, uniting many souls in one" (48). In this group setting, everyone has the same goal, which helps them to align their thoughts and achieve a calm state of mind. Another good reason to do meditation in a group setting is for accountability. When meditating individually, one is likely to become distracted. In this group meditation, everyone is dedicated to achieving the same goal. Together, we can have more focused and relaxed…

Since I started the MSW program, stress has been no stranger and during my first semester I was introduced to mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) in one of my classes. MBSR began over 30 years ago at the University of Massachusetts Medical School by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn (Noonan, 2014). MBSR was originally developed as an 8-week course designed to teach students’ basic relaxation and breathing strategies, along with mediation and simple yoga (Noonan, 2014). Till this day the course is being used and adopted from many Universities to improve the quality of life for students (Noonan, 2014). The research behind MBSR has shown to reduce stress, depression, and anxiety through simple techniques including purposeful breathing, basic mediation,…

I chose to try doing a mindfulness exercise every morning for twenty-one days in order to see the effects it would have. A few years ago I was really good about consistently doing a mindful exercise every morning and I remembered it having a positive effect. Based on my past experiences I decided to give it another try. At the end of the twenty-one days, I found there was a heavy decrease in stress, my memory was improved slightly, emotions were more level, and my mind was sharper or more focused. The stress or anxiety levels decreasing as well as emotions being level is a very common effect people find with practicing mindfulness, “ In one study, participants randomly assigned to an eight-week mindfulness-based stress reduction…

I will begin practicing meditation five minutes every day. On November 15, 2015, I will have increased this time to ten minutes every day. However, my ultimate goal is to have reached twenty minutes of meditation ever day by December 15, 2015. Each meditation session will begin with the meditation steps outlined in Lucia Thornton’s “Basic Steps of Meditation” (2007). My purpose in learning to meditate is to achieve a state of mindfulness, which will enable me to focus and be aware of my thoughts and feelings throughout each day. Overall, I believe that successful meditation practices can aid in reducing stress and help me focus on something other than the chaos I may be experiencing in nursing…

Carol Anne Rizer, Mary Helen Fagan, Carol Kilmon, and Linda Rath have studied undergraduate college students to determine if mindfulness meditation can help people become more aware of their stress, and to help cope. Their findings have been placed in The Role of Perceived Stress and Health Belief’s on College Students’ Intentions to Practice Mindfulness Meditation. Although this piece of work shows how knowledgeable the people who were involved in it are, some things could have been changed to…
