Gun control in the United States has been a major topic of discussion for many years. This topic has become more and more popular in recent years due to the large majority of senators and congressmen that are liberal and therefore historically against gun rights for United States citizens. Also President Obama has taken a strong stance against gun rights in the United States. Recently after the infamous shootings at Virginia Tech, and the shooting of congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords gun control lobbyists have gained some traction and debating points for their fight to rid the United States citizens of their 2nd amendment right to bear arms. After the shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford’s President Barrack Obama promised that he would develop new steps on gun safety in response. Most people in the United States that are against the right for people to own guns are very misinformed of the effects of citizens owning guns. Having citizens in the United States that bear arms has many positive effects on the country. In the following I will explain how gun control doesn’t reduce crime, violates our fourth amendment rights, The thought by most politicians for gun control and gun control lobbyists is that by having citizens that own guns increases the crime rate in the United States. This is false. States and other countries have proven that when citizens are not allowed to legally own guns the crime rate is much higher in their countries than those that do allow their citizens to own guns. For example Since Australia's 1996 laws banning most guns and making it a crime to use a gun defensively, armed robberies rose by 51%, unarmed robberies by 37%, assaults by 24% and kidnappings by 43%. While murders fell by 3%, manslaughter rose by 16%. Also in England according to the BBC News, handgun crime in the United Kingdom rose by 40% in the two years after it passed its draconian gun ban in 1997. Gun control activist believe dispute these findings from other western countries saying that the way it would affect the United States would be different, but there are also examples of these gun control laws in the United States having opposite effects of what they were intended to do. States with gun control laws in effect have significantly higher crime rates. For example Maryland, which has considerably stricter gun control laws than the other surrounding states, has a seventy percent higher murder rate. This statistic is mind blowing due to the fact that gun control laws can have this much effect on the safety of the citizens of this state. The reason why gun control laws have an adverse effect when they are implemented is because the only people that get affected by the gun control laws are law abiding citizens. If a country imposes gun control laws on its citizens that make a complete gun ban the only people left with guns are the criminals. When there is a crime committed using a gun most of the time the gun used is an illegally owned gun. The guns used by criminals are either illegally bought or stolen and therefore not registered. So when a gun control law is put into place the only people that follow these laws are the people that are not committing crimes in the first place. In 2009 Chicago put a gun law into place that made all hand guns illegal in the city. This law was only in place for a short period of time but when it was in place there was a rash of shooting in the city of Chicago that left thirty wounded and three dead over the course of a weekend. This rash of shootings happened because the only people left with guns were the criminals. Gun control is unnecessary because it takes away the citizens’ ability to defend themselves. This is the main reason why when gun control laws are put into effect the crime rates go up. Without people being able to defend themselves the criminals with guns are able to run wild without any risk of a citizen stopping them. There are countless examples of citizens in the United...
