The following information will explain the differences between a group and a team.   It will also highlight the importance of workplace diversity and the relationship to team dynamics in the workplace.  
Groups
A group or a team will depend on the nature of the group’s mission.   Groups are good resources for organization as they help accomplish tasks.   A group is effective when they can achieve high levels of task performance, satisfaction, and team viability. Working in a group means that all, members will interact to exchange information, perspective and to make decisions that will help individuals perform in his of hers area of responsibility.   A group will have the same purpose and share a goal by all group members.   In a group communication is viewed as the central process of a group. The members of a group will recognize and acknowledge their membership in a collective. A group will have formal and informal roles, rules, and norms that control interactions of group members.   Group members may influence one another that the aspiration to stay in a group increases the probability for mutual influence.
Teams
Teams are more structured and members share a common goal. Team members work together work together on a common project and all members are accountable for the work.   A team is usually smaller than a group and can be composed of four to 20 members who interact with each other.   In order for teams to achieve goals, they must have responsibility, independence, and the power to operate.   Teams have more performance potential but also require more development than work groups. Teamwork is about commitment and willingness to listen and respond constructively, provides support, and recognized achievement.
