Asignment 1 Setting Ground Rules-
“Analyse different way to establish ground rules with learners which underpin appropriate behaviour and respect for others”.
Introduction
Educators and learners find setting ground rules valuable. These can be different for groups and the
learners depending on the course and learning under taken.
I am going to explore different ways of introducing and setting ground rules for the adult learner.
Further more contrast different ways that helps to set ground rules and their importance which will
aid behaviour and respect for each other in the group.
Definition of ground rules on the world wide web suggests:
“The basic rule or principle on which future actions or behaviour should be based”
(www.dictionary, reference.com)
Adult learners come from different backgrounds, experiences and level of education. Therefore
it is vitally important that ground rules are set at the biggening of course or learning. The ground
rules set by learners will assist students as well as Tutors. Once agreed everyone involved will be
aware of their individual and collective responsibilities. This shared discussion and agreement
will remind people of area's to be covered. There can be different processes and methods to
reach an agreement but the benefits can be numerous.
There will also be adult students coming back into education after a long period and may feel
stressed or even anxious so to establish ground rules may ease people into a discussion about their
feelings and act as an ice breaker at the same time. However for this to work the size of the group
has to be small and the environment conducive to discuss feelings, fears and challenges ahead.
On my first week we spent some time going through ground rules that were read out to all of the
group to establish a tutorial and set ground rules, these now form a contract amongst us all. I
