Perfection is a Flaw
Green Pink Caviar – Marilyn Minter 2009

„Perfection is a flaw as far as I am concerned.” (, 2009) This is the opening sentence of Marilyn Minter in the YouTube video promoting the 2009 fall make up of the cosmetic company; M.A.C. This sentence might be worth noting for us, if we will talk about Minters 2009 Green Pink Caviar solo exhibition. The exhibition was made up several photographs, paintings and a short movie with the same title. This was her second solo exhibition and most of the work was created on M.A.C.’s backstage. Since the time I became familiar with Minters work, it has always intrigued me. She says that if something gets wet, it’s on a good way of getting sexy (, 2010). I believe she is right, there is something in her work with what she can grab sexuality. Even though, (except for her Pamela Anderson shoot) we do not see complete frames of people. This sexiness is intriguing. Maybe because of the scrutiny it enforces and because of the space for imagination it leaves us with. She has said in an interview that she is a pro-sex feminist (, 2010). This is an unusual term to me, nearly a paradox; that I can very much relate to. This is something that really reflects on our lives today, especially for women. There is a vibrant connection between Minters work and our socio-cultural phenomena of being perfect; this duality is ‘all over’ her works. Green Pink Caviar is a nearly eight minute movie that was exhibited in the lobby of the MoMA for over a year and was also shown on digital billboards on Sunset Boulevard in LA, and the Creative Time MTV billboard in Times Square, New York. It is also known for being the backdrop of Madonna’s Sticky & Sweet Tour during the opening song. It is interesting to see how her work is mixed between high art and low art.
