ABSTRACT

2. GREEN DATABASE Database should utilize several modern hardware capabilities. The purpose of our research study was based on the case of green data base undertaken by T Willis Lang and Jignesh M. Patel Computer Sciences Department University of Wisconsin Madison, USA, where we have suggested and studied the importance of database going ecofriendly and Data Centers and the Database management systems have always ignored the task of managing the energy consumed during query execution and query processing. The economic and environmental factors now require that Data Centers give attention to energy consumption and proper energy utilization. Energy efficiency, a new focus for general-purpose computing, has been a major technology driver in the mobile and embedded areas for some time. Earlier work emphasized extending battery life, but it has since expanded to include peak power reduction because thermal constraints began to limit further CPU performance improvements.

1. INTRODUCTION Rising concerns about the amount of energy consumed by the data centers, several computer hardware manufacturing companies are developing energy efficient components enabling to toggle the amount of power consumed by them at several workloads. But these features are not adopted by the Database Managements Systems which are one of the sources of large energy consumption. This report shows two techniques called Process Voltage/Frequency Control (PVC), Explicit Query Delays (QED) for trading energy efficiency into database systems with their experimental

PUE (Power usage effectiveness), the ratio of total facility energy to IT equipment energy within a data computer, which measures how much of the power is actually used by the computing equipment. It is an important place to start when considering how to reduce data center power consumption because it is one of the most effective metrics for measuring data center energy efficiency. PUE is calculated by taking the total power of consumed by a data center facility then dividing by the power consumed by the IT equipment. In practical terms, a PUE value of 1 means that all power going into the data center is being used to power IT equipment. Anything above a value of 1 means there is data center overhead required to support the IT load. Having a holistic understanding of a data center's energy consumption is a key first step in being able to determine the appropriate steps necessary to consider how to reduce data center power consumption. Therefore, the understanding how efficiently a data center operates is critical to ensure cost-effective operation. Since we pay for every watt of power entering the data center, every watt of overhead represents an additional cost.     In this paper we survey, consolidate, and present the state of the art in distributed database concurrency control. The heart of our analysts is a decomposition of the concurrency control problem into two major subproblems: read-write and write-write synchronization. We describe a series of synchromzation techniques for solving each subproblem and show how to combine these techniques into algorithms for solving the entire concurrency control problem. Such algorithms are called "concurrency control methods." We describe 48 principal methods, including all practical algorithms that have appeared m the literature plus several new ones.     Database management systems (DBMSs) have largely ignored the task of managing the energy consumed during query processing. Both economic and environmental factors now require that DBMSs pay close attention to energy consumption. In this paper we approach this issue by considering energy consumption as a first-class performance goal for query processing in a DBMS. We present two concrete techniques that can be used by a DBMS to directly manage the energy consumption. Both techniques trade energy consumption for performance. The first technique, called PVC, leverages the ability of modern processors to execute at lower processor voltage and frequency. The second technique, called QED, uses query aggregation to leverage common components of queries in a workload. Using experiments run on a commercial DBMS and MySQL, we show that PVC can reduce the processor energy consumption by 49% of the original consumption while increasing the response time by only 3%. On MySQL, PVC can reduce energy consumption by 20% with a response time penalty of only 6%. For simple selection queries with no predicate over-lap, we show that QED can be used to gracefully trade response time for energy, reducing energy consumption by 54% for a 43% increase in average response time.
