Greece is home to the first advanced civilizations in Europe, ancient Greece. The civilization of ancient Greece has been immensely influential on language, politics, educational systems, philosophy, science, and the arts.

Chapter 2 begins with a look at the Near East, with the first document talking about Cyrus' successful conquests. Thanks to the strong relationship between political and religious beliefs of that time, it enabled Cyrus to reign Persia, Babylon, the country of Sumer and Akkad, and many neighboring kingdoms, thanks to the beliefs of being blessed by Marduk, king of the gods. The second document talks about the Hebrew god Yahweh, the beginning of monotheism, Yahweh's covenant, and how the Ten Commandments were created to dictate the Hebrew's way of life. The last three documents focus on Greek society at that time. The third document is two poems depicting life in two city-states; Sparta and Athens. The first poem addresses the values and conduct of Spartan warriors, while the latter focuses on the excellence of Athens and it's citizens as a role model for neighboring city-states. The fourth document talks about the colonization of Cyrene, and the clash of cultures between Cyrene and the Greeks. The final document deals with the status of women in society. The relationship of the author with the goddess Aphrodite, and the idealization of the role of women for the Greeks.

Chapter 3 talks about the time of prosperity and achievement in Greece. Greek rise to glory is due to it's political, philosophical, and scientific innovations. The first document talks about the principles of Athens and how it stands out from neighbors and enemies, and the obligations of it's citizens. Document two talks about Socrates' trial based on his philosophical beliefs and how it endangers Athenian standards. The third document talks about improvements in the medical field, starting the movement of scientific medicine. The last three documents talk about the roles...
