As Nick says in The Great Gatsby, “ They were careless people, Tom and Daisy they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together and let other people clean up the mess they had made.” (Fitzgerald, pg. 127). The quote shows that in the 1920s all people cared about is money and social status, and it does not matter who they hurt along the way. All that matters is their wealth and social status. The people in the 1920s are considered immoral according to religious standards, money is the highest priority for them, and pleasure replaced honor between family and friends.
“God knows what you’ve been doing, everything you’ve been doing. You may fool me , but you can’t fool God!” (Fitzgerald, pg. 159). Fitzgerald shows that most of the things people do in the 1920s is immoral and that God is watching them all make mistakes. Throughout this book Fitzgerald gives examples of their immoral actions such as, when Tom Buchanan has an affair with Myrtle Wilson, and Daisy Buchanan has an affair with Jay Gatsby. Myrtle is married to George Wilson, who says this quote, and he does not know that his wife is cheating on him. However he knows that God knows, and sees everything. When Daisy runs into Myrtle with her car and does not stop is another example of immoral actions.
“Her voice is full of money,” ( Fitzgerald, pg 120) says Gatsby. This quote shows that all Gatsby care about is money, and not how beautiful or nice Dasiy is. Gatsby is very poor growing up and works very hard to become rich and when his is rich then Daisy wants him. Tom is not going to leave Daisy for Myrtle, because he does not want to sink down that far on the social ladder. Myrtle is lives in the Valley of the Ashes where all the poor people live. Another reason why Daisy is not going to leave Tom, because Tom is old money, which is the better...
