Going back to school obtaining a masters’ degree can be challenging. They have to discipline themselves and prepare for obstacles ahead of their long journey. It may be difficult and they may want to give up because of their full-time job, time management, financial hardships, and stress. I’m learning to stay focus and keeping my eyes on the prize in obtaining my masters’ degree in Health Care Administration. I will explain my personal and professional goals, reasons for pursuing a graduate degree, three challenges I face in meeting my goals, strategies I use to overcome these challenges, milestones that will mark my short-term goal and long-term goal, my strength and weakness to personal communication, and three strategies I will use to improve my communication skills.

Personal and professional goals / Reasons for pursing graduate study I want to obtain a graduate degree to accomplish my long-term educational goal that I set for myself when I obtain my undergraduate degree. I want to prove to myself that I can achieve this goal and that anything is possible. Obtaining my graduate degree will also teach my family on how to stay positive and focus and to never be afraid to chase after their dreams if they see me doing it. The career that I have working in the information technology field is a good rewarding career. I then find myself drained out from the hectic work schedule and not enjoying what I do. This is why I am pursing my masters’ degree so that I can move into a new career field; advance my employment opportunities, and financial status. I know a masters’ degree will help me succeed into a position with more leadership, and to provide for my family so that I can help them

“I attribute my success to this - I never gave or took any excuse." (Florence Nightingale) The reasons that I wish to pursue a Masters of Science in Nursing are many. I have been practicing as a nurse since I graduated with a BSN degree in 2010 from East Tennessee State University. For two years I have worked as a Dialysis Unit Nurse and it has been during this time that my passion for the vocation of nursing has truly bloomed. Through this experience I have learned the value of keeping to one’s dreams and persevering. Despite the fact it has taken me some time to obtain my Bachelors degree it has only inspired me to continue on to get my Masters so I can expand my knowledge of the nursing profession and all that it entails. A Masters degree would also help me in my future career goals and aspirations, which is to be able to assist those in the rural areas of our community.…

The AACN Preferred Vision of the Professoriate in Baccalaureate and Graduate Nursing Programs (2008) states that “courses in the nursing program will be taught by faculty with graduate-level academic preparation and advanced expertise in the areas of content they teach.” There is national recognition, however, of the growing shortage of nursing educators to fill faculty and other educator roles within the healthcare delivery system. Master’s programs that prepare graduates for nurse educator roles are designed to meet these needs. Nurses with a master’s degree may teach patients and their families and/or student nurses, staff nurses, and a variety of direct-care providers. As outlined in Essential IX, all master’s-prepared nurses will develop competence in applying teaching/learning principles in work with patients and/or students across the continuum of care in a variety of settings. However, as recommended in the Carnegie Foundation report (2009), Educating Nurses: A Call for Radical Transformation, those individuals who choose a nurse educator role, as do all master’s graduates, require preparation across all nine Essential areas, including graduate-level clinical practice content and experiences in an area of nursing practice.…

Each individual has his own reason for pursuing a graduate degree. Professionally, a graduate degree shows that the person has the motivation, ambition, and dedication to improve and thus strive to obtain a position in which he/she can apply and expand his knowledge base. Many perceive a graduate degree as a status symbol, an opportunity for advancement, or even a cause for more money. The choice to seek additional education after investing four years in an undergraduate degree shows commitment to learning and recognition of self-worth.
