Graduate Study Challenges and Strategies for Personal Success From the early beginnings of my nursing career in the Philippines where I started to work as a civilian nurse for the Philippine Air Force, I realized that there would always be challenges. I have dealt with each challenge as learning opportunities that I may use them as building blocks or foundation toward my future. From the missing medications in my emergency cart then to pursuing my Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN) now, are necessary elements that would take my nursing practice to a higher level. Personal and Professional Goals

Among the personal goals that drive me to maintain focus are: * Consistently save for my children’s college education * Maintaining a balanced life for the essential relationships in my life (my spouse and children) It was my mother’s words that resonate throughout my relatively young career. She once said right after my high school graduation “the rolling rock gathers no moss” (L. Aguila, personal communication, July 1995) where she inferred that I should not stagnate. Since then I have made it a point to roll continually and be progressive. So in order to position my career for the future I would have to do the following: * Finish my MSN degree

* Publish a research article in vascular access
* Continue visibility in the industry by staying active in the local and international level of my organization

Reasons for pursuing graduate studies
Earning a master’s degree will position my career for the future. It is the most practical step to take instead of jumping into a PhD program. Considering I have not attended a formal school for over 15 years, I believe that the coursework required in graduate studies would be more manageable in terms of time and effort.
