Me, Gracielle Oliveira Tavares
My name is Gracielle Tavares. I was born in the wonderful country called Brazil. I lived in Salvador – Bahia 3 years ago. I have one sister and she is five years old. She lives with my mother in a small city called Ubatã also in Bahia – Brazil. My mother majored in Education when in college and now she is a teacher. All my life I studied in the public schools of Brazil. I come from a simple family and I see my education as an opportunity to have a better future. I have devoted myself to my studies, and I’ve always had a lot of determination with my challenges. I finished high school when I was seventeen years old; the following year I started studying at the Federal University of Bahia. My minor is Interdisciplinary in Science and
Technology and my major is Electrical Engineer.
In 2011 when I started my minor, I changed myself as I started to live on my way when
I moved from Ubatã to Salvador. I received the opportunity to come to the United States through of the Science Without Borders Program. With the purpose of learning English as a second language and take a few classes in my major. My first challenge was English because I never spoke English before, but in my minor I used some words in English. In technology some words there are only in English particularly in Programming. My contact with English has always been very little but what motivates me to be here is the challenge.
When I arrived in Worcester all things appeared to be part of a film to me. When in
Assumption College I felt afraid because I only knew Silvania who was the only person I knew who spoke Portuguese. I met her one week before traveling to the United States. I moved from one country to another, I changed my language, I left my family, friends and my

boyfriend in order to reach my dream of living in America. Here in the United States my life is totally different from my life in Brazil. I worked at my university as a tutor of the subject
Science and Technology at the same time I was working in a research group as well. I needed to help my mother pay my expenses for living away from home. In the United States is a bit different, I only study and I still have the privilege of receiving money because I study. I believe that all these events come from my dedication in my studies and the desire to be able to build a better future for myself and my family. I found in education the opportunity to better the lives of my family members, something I would not be able to do without an education.

During the summer after my tenth grade year, I was notified of my acceptance into the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange program. I was overjoyed. I am incredibly passionate about travelling and exploring different cultures. It was a scholarship only awarded to 250 students across the nation. The program was a fully funded year abroad in Germany. I attended a German high school, I lived with a German host family, and I struggled through the challenges of learning the German language. Before my feet touched the German ground, I could only speak two German words. With this exceptional grasp of the language, I set out into the new world that was Germany. I began to discover the great lengths to which we take our knowledge of the English language…

Growing up in a family of eight, I knew my parents struggled. Although they worked hard to provide the necessities my siblings and I needed, they still had a hard time. I’ve watched my parents struggle to get jobs with their lack of college, and I decided I wanted to make the most out of my intelligence. My career goals are currently undecided because I still have admiration for too many subjects to fully commit to one; however, my educational goals are to earn a doctoral degree. As my mom jumped from part-time job to part-time job, there was a stream of unsteadiness in my life. With a new job came a new salary, but sometimes it meant a lower salary.…

Quickly many things did go wrong. The registry listed me as a sophomore while other departments did not. The housing department moved me into a dorm which caused me to have a severe allergic reaction. Luckily since the registry had me as a sophomore I could proceed academically with no issues. However, as of writing this essay I am living out of a hotel.…

As a youngster, most people are taught to read and write, yet about 17% of the world’s population is not literate. I am fortunate to be viewed as proficient in two world-wide spoken languages. Learning how to be literate in a new language can be extremely rewarding in the long run because it opens more career opportunities and is useful to be accepted in an academically advanced institution. For instance, being bilingual in English and Spanish has given me the opportunity to travel to the United States to receive a proper education in a safe environment. In order to reach the level of English I have right now, I had to go through several obstacles, including numerous classes…

Relationships changed as far as the type of people that surrounded me and my children. In addition, my relationship with my parents has grown tremendously. Career aspirations have changed, as a result of this I am now attending Wayland Baptist University studying to receive my degree in nursing. I awoke one day and told myself, it's time to make my dreams come true! I'm a strong believer that God has us right where he needs us, even if getting there was not ideal. Working as a Paraprofessional has reinstalled the importance of education for not only me, but my children as well. I do not believe I would have pushed to further my education and strive for my children's as much as I do if I was not able to see the importance of it first hand. Some days are better than others and I know I still have a ways to go before I'm done with school. My biggest accomplishment and gift will be to see my families faces when I walk the stage and receive my diploma. I want my children to know that no matter how tough a situation may seem that they can get through anything and to never give up on their dreams. Through every bad comes good, early adulthood proved to be the perfect example of…
