RELATIONSHIP OF HAPPINESS WITH GPA
Connection of happiness and GPA score is used for researches very often. Its relationship was measured in many cases, and there were also different findings. Some researchers showed there is significant correlations, another ones showed the opposite. We wanted to see what would be the results if our sample group would be students of university. Hypothesis was created in order to support our results, and we believed in positive relationships in these two variables, however; our research’s results showed something else; hypothesis was not confirmed. Level of happiness and GPA score were not correlated, there was no significant relationship observed. These findings suggested that the happiness was not important issue when it comes to gaining high GPA score. Keywords: Happiness, GPA, relationship
RELATIONSHIP OF HAPPINESS WITH GPA
How Does Level of Happiness Affect Student’s Academic Performance and Grade Point Average
To begin this research paper, first we had to answer the question, which was connected to one of our variables; what is happiness? There was not any specific answer to this question since happiness could be defined differently. It could be interpreted as being healthy, it could mean having lot of money, and there are people who could believe happiness stands for spending time with beloved and family. According to Oxford Dictionary, happiness refers to personal and individual psychological state of being happy (2013). We could conclude that during this state we experience joy, positive emotions and satisfaction in general. Happiness is the positive part of our life, when we do not face the stress and discomfort. Psychologists on the other side defined happiness as a term that could be divided into three main parts; ‘pleasure, engagement, and meaning’ (Seligman, 2011). Each of these words represented different phase of happiness. Pleasure stood for the part when we feel good and happy. Engagement meant having a satisfactory life in terms of family, friend, and hobbies. Meaning referred to usage of our personal strengths and strong abilities to give a stronger purpose to our life in order to improve it. There were also some those that written different books analyzing happiness on its descriptive as well as evaluating meanings (Feldman, 2010). Happiness is involved in life of each of us in a certain level. The purpose of this research was to examine whether happiness influenced students’ GPA and helped them to perform academically better. Abbreviation GPA stands for grade point average, which is important term in every student’s life and studies. It is represented by a number, which equals to the mean of the final RELATIONSHIP OF HAPPINESS WITH GPA
grades received from the subjects students pass during each semester (Felton, 2005). GPA is also important for students in order to be accepted to universities for further graduate studies, moreover it is important when it comes to getting a job. Many companies require GPA of potential applicant in order to find the most suitable job position (Gaball, 2013). That is why we could conclude that each student wanted to get his GPA as close to the highest point, which is 4.0, as possible. Grade point average is the most important result of student’s studies. Our research therefore used GPA as a second variable in combination with happiness. Regarding our topic, there have been similar researches done previously. The author of such a research, Janet E. Barber, which was examining happiness and college students’ academic performance believed, that there is a correlation between these two variables (2011). However, her research showed no correlation or any relationship between these two variables. In fact, study found that...
