“Good practice in the writing of academic assignments and the areas of bad practice that should be avoided”

2. INTRODUCTION

Academic Writing refers to the academic style of writing from a third person’s perspective. It has a subject matter that is central and all those that are included in the content would contribute to signify the emphasis of the argument. This is a formal way of presentation which includes discretion or repetitions and would be presenting the view of the authors in an objective way. Generally, academic writing includes writing essays, reports, compositions etc. While writing academically, it is very much essential that the writer should clearly focus on the topic and should do proper research about it. Another significant aspect is the presentation style, which should be followed accordingly. Generally, there is a tendency in most students who are new to this process of academic writing to use the information in the same manner due to their lack of understanding about the process. So, the writer should always develop an attitude of acknowledging the source from where he collects the information. Moreover, the Universities and the students should take a combined effort in promoting the favorable aspects of academic writing and in eliminating negative practices that destroy the essence of academic writing.

This report will be looking on the features and good practices in writing academic materials and also the bad practices in academic writing along with some of the reasons that cause them.

3. MAIN BODY

3.1 Features of academic writing

Some of the features of academic writing which are common are using materials that have source rather than making self opinions, comparing and contrasting the theories, stating the criteria that is used for evaluating the subject matter, complexities by admitting drawbacks of using the own argument and clearly stating the difficulties from arriving at a proper conclusion, following an argument by shows linkage between the points in a logical manner, decision making about the theory or model to be used, following a structure that includes related sentences in one paragraph, being discursive which shows that there is linkage and proper sequence between the paragraphs and being emotionally neutral in presenting the views. The advantages of academic writing are developing the writing skill in a more creative way which also develops the whole creative potency and strengthening the vocabulary and grammar of the writer is another greater benefit which the writer gains from reinforcing the various vocabularies and the aspect of grammar (Cottrell, 2003, p. 157).

3.2 Good practices in academic writing:

a. Use short and simple terms- It’s always good to use common terms and simple words that can be easily understandable.

b. Be Impersonal- the writer should not use personal pronouns in the material.

c. Ensure sequencing of words- It could be better if the subject of the verb comes first and then comes the object, the reader would feel more helpful.

d. Order the sequences- the procedures should be described in the same order it happens.

e. Short paragraphs- can be used rather than the long ones because short ones always capture quick attention and would be more convincing.
