What is nutrition? Nutrition is the process of taking in food and using it for energy, growth, and good health. Having a good nutrition plan is essential for a longer, healthier life style. Nutrition consists of taking in vitamins, exercising, and eating right.
A nutrition plan contains vegetables, fruits, grains, and meats. Even though these foods are part of a nutrition plan, no one can eat as much as desired. The amount one intakes depends on the weight, sex, and activeness of the body who is consuming it. Someone who is extremely active can take in more calories than someone who is not as active. A calorie is a unit of heat that measures the energy available in foods. A female who is 9-13 years of age and has a sedentary lifestyle can consume 1600 calories per day, while a moderately active person can consume 2000 calories per day, and an active person can consume 2200 calories per day. Males from 9-13 years of age with a sedentary lifestyle can consume 1800 calories per day, while someone living a moderately active lifestyle can consume 2000 calories per day, and an active person can consume 2600 calories per day (Branson 113).
Nutrition consists of many different kinds of vitamins. One of the vitamins in nutrition is vitamin A. It is very important and helps increase your vision at night and also helps skin cells grow. Types of foods that contain vitamin A are yellow, orange, and dark green vegetables. Fortified dairy products are also foods that contain vitamin A. Another type of vitamin in nutrition is Vitamin D. It is a common vitamin that one uses to help strengthen the bones and help the bones keep growing. Just simply walking outside when the sun is shining can give the body vitamin D. It is also put in dairy products and also in eggs and fish oils. Vitamin B2 is a vitamin that is not as well-known as vitamins A and D. Vitamin B2 helps with energy and metabolism. It can be absorbed by eating dairy products, meats, vegetables, and whole grains. Vitamin C is a commonly heard of and well known vitamin that people think about in taking every day. It is a vitamin that helps the womb and also can help with the gums. It can be absorbed by the body if one eats citrus fruits, red or green peppers, cabbage, and even strawberries. Minerals are also another important factor to the nutrition plan. Calcium is another important vitamin. Most know that dairy products are a huge source of calcium, but salmon, tofu, and kale are also sources for calcium. Calcium is also important for muscles function as well as bone function in the body. Iron is also an important vitamin that should not be left out of one’s nutrition plan. Iron deficiency can cause many problems in the body if enough is not taken in. A low iron level can be harmful to the concentration of hemophilia and also to the electron carriers in the body. Some sources help absorb iron in the body are meats, eggs, whole grains, green leafy vegetables, and dried fruits. Sodium is a mineral that can be a good thing, but it can also be a bad thing if too much too much is consumed. Sodium can help with the balance of water in the body and also help with the function of nerves and muscles. Potassium has the same function in the body as sodium, but one can absorb it from different things. Sodium is absorbed through processed foods and table salts, and potassium as well as meat, dairy products, fruits and vegetables, and even grains. Although these are not the only vitamins that the body needs and will absorb, these are the main ones that people hear about regularly(Miller and Levine 871-872).
