golf
From the moment my father took me to a golf course at the age of 9, I knew I had a great passion for the game of golf. I began playing at the club level, but soon through perseverance and practice, I qualified for the junior trials at the national level. The competition was fierce as it featured the best players from around the country.
The trials proved to be daunting since we were expected to play 81 holes over 3 days, and I was not off to a great start due to immense pressure. By the second day, I felt devoid of energy and my shots were listless. However, I did not allow myself to get discouraged and by the 3rd day I had caught up to be just 5 strokes behind the top two players. All I required was a par on the last hole to secure myself a place in the national team. Unfortunately, luck was not with by my side.
As disheartening as the loss was, I had tried my best and that was a mental triumph. I aspire to continue golf not only as a hobby, but also as a potential future career.

After reading Night Hoops, I have developed a new mindset on how I should pursue my goals no matter what impediments obstruct my ability to reach them. Nick, the protagonist, always dreamt of earning his spot on his high school’s varsity basketball team, but his road to the team was filled with family troubles; being overshadowed by his older brother, Scott; and run-ins with Trent, the local bully. However, Nick persevered through it all and accomplished his goal of making the varsity basketball team. Over the past few years, I have been extremely dedicated to becoming the best golfer I can be. However recently, I have lost my enthusiasm for the game. Because of this, I feel like I can relate to Nick and although he is a fictional character, use him as inspiration to rededicate myself to the game of golf.…

Then it was finally my turn and as I stepped up the wind died down, now was my time and I teed the ball up quickly. I stood back and looked down the fairway for the different variables on the hole. There was out-of-bounds was far right and there was woods on the left but the hole had a fairly wide fairway. I begin to think of how I plan to hit the ball and I plan on putting a slight draw on the ball to give it topspin so it will roll more. I feel good about my swing and when I felt ready so I stepped up to the ball and pictured my ball in the fairway. Then I brought the club…

Growing up, I was never naturally athletic and very injury prone. Regardless of these issues, I always remained determined and strived to accomplish my goals. As I enter high school one of my main goals was to make the varsity tennis team. During my freshmen year I practiced every day for the first 3 months of school hoping that I could just make the team. Unfortunately I tore a ligament in my wrist for the second time which prevented me from practicing till right before the tennis season started. I ended barely making the JV team which was very disappointing, but it only motivated me for next year. In my heart I knew that I if I was determined enough I could play varsity next year on my own merit. As I progressed through the sophomore year,…

When I first came to Lake Highland I tried out for the girl’s golf team, but I was not experienced or skilled enough to make it on. This was a devastating moment for me, but I realized that I needed to try harder and work harder to make it on the team the next year. I became much more skilled and was able to make the team with ease. What the failure told me was that if I got knocked down then I would have to work hard to get back up. This lesson was very crucial to me my junior year of high school. During the golf season I severely injured my wrist. This injury put me out of the game for six months. I gained arthritis in my wrist, but I remembered what happened to me in seventh grade and worked hard to regain my skills. I made the team the…

After boosting myself up, I finally decided to try out. I was told we would have a new coach. I was a little scared that we wouldn’t have our old coach anymore. Also, when the team was mad a little after, our old coach came back just in time. Knowing that if we had a chance to get our old coach back was wonderful. Because nothing would be the same. Every sport and routines are different from the beginning to the end whole different start.…

Wait i’m too far ahead let me rewind a bit (flashback). out side with the warm sunset and the cool breeze of fall elegantly blows in my face. My friends and i were playing from noon to 7-ish. We all had smiles across our faces as big as they could stretch. Running in circles and up and over, down and under random objects trying to escape the tagger who was my friend chase. The smiles we had began to fade as we obtained the shrewdness of boredom. We found a golf club and some golf balls outside by a tree so we came up with a game to where one person hits the golf balls with the club and whoever catches it wins. I thought i would be smart and stand behind my brother…

The day had come, my very first state event which happened to be the 2013 State “A” Girls Golf Tournament. As a single competitor coming from the small town of Lennox, I had come out of regions placing 19th in which the top twenty-five make the cut. This morning I awoke to the view of the morning fog and the christening dew that sits upon the early morning grass. The sound of sprinklers whistling water through the air reminds me that it is almost time for the indescribable battle that is about to take place at the greatest stage on earth. My caddie awoke just after to begin preparing for the great battle that was about to take place throughout each of the four rounds held at the sacred grounds of Augusta National golf club, I had to play each hole as if it were a blank canvas.…
