Going Green Costs Too Much Green
For decades the term “green” has been synonymously paired across cultures with the word, “money”. Today, in the 21st Century, green is used to promote ecological responsibility. Preservation of Mother Earth has been the mantra of many in America from as far back as the Native Americans. O’Sullivan (2007) contends that green is the universal sign for ecological responsibility. “Going green” is the latest phrase used to encourage human beings to keep the earth protected and environmentally safe (Kneidel, 2008).
However, in the present state of our economy, nobody is considering the expense that going green encompasses or the dictatorial way the green “idea” is pressuring us according to Milloy (2009). He characterizes groups or individuals who do not agree with the pro-green movement as “The Greens”. Yes, there may be individuals who have a desire to comply with environmental agencies, but it is virtually impossible because one rarely has extra money in one’s budget! So, I suggest that going green costs too much green.
Lifestyle changes, start-up expense, and generational environmental inheritance are a few of the things we should consider when we talk about going green. It is not easy to change the status quo or the routine way we have been doing things. To the contrary, “the Greens”, according to Milloy (2009), aim to regulate our behavior, downsize our lifestyle, and invade the most intimate aspects of our personal lives. Too much government involvement in our personal lives is not cool.
Deciding how to make personal lifestyle changes depends on individual tastes, needs, and desires. Technically, attitude plays a roles here too; where there is a will - there is a way, and vice versa. Milloy further contends that what “The Greens” really seek is to dictate the very parameters of our daily lives-where we can live, what transportation we can use, what we can eat, and even how many children we can...
