Nutrition
Nutrition is a process by which the body takes in breaks down and uses food. Good nutrition is important as it keeps us healthy. It helps us grow, develop , prevent diseases and help the body to function properly.
Food that gives good nutrition contains substances called nutrients
The six basic nutrients are :
Carbohydrates
Fats and oils
Protein
Vitamins
Minerals
Water

Carbohydrates : Is an important nutrient as it gives the body heat and energy. It contains starch and sugar. Food that gives us carbohydrates are yam , potato, rice, corn, dasheen, green bananas, breadfruit, breach, macaroni, noodles, flour, cakes, biscuit

Fats and oils : This nutrient gives the body heat and it helps keep the body warm. Examples of food that contain fats and oils are
Butter, cooking oil, nuts, legumes (peas and beans), avocado, fish.
Protein : This nutrient is very important to our body as it helps our body with growth. It helps to grow strong bones and teeth. It mends and repairs broken tissues. It helps to heal our cuts properly. We get protein maily from animal sources. Some foods rich in protein are : milk cheese meat eggs and fish.
Vitamins : Vitamins are needed in the body in small amounts for proper nutrition and good health. They help the body to keep away (resist) diseases.
The most important vitamins are A, B, C, D and K.
A: keeps the skin and eyes healthy (fish, carrots, green vegetables)
B: helps in muscle co-ordination. ( fish, egg, cereal, leafy vegetables)
C: helps with growth of body cells, bones , teeth. Develops healthy skin ( citrus fruits , raw vegetables)
D: helps the growth of bones and teeth. (sunlight , fish)
K : help to clot our blood. (green vegetables , liver, egg, cereal)
