Global Ethics and Accountability
We live and work in a global climate; some of us even work for multi national companies while others may work for companies located strictly in the United States. But one thing that they all have in common is Ethics and Accountability. I would like to focus in on Global Ethics and Accountability, which we not only owe the citizens of the United States, but the citizens of the world, and we need to take a look at business operations with a Geocentric Attitude. Managers and Employees in today’s workforce play a much stronger roll in developing the Corporate Culture than those in the pasts. Corporations are being forced not only by outside forces such as shareholders and consumers, but also internal issues to act accountable for the products and by-products they produce. So what is this thing called Global Ethical Accountability and what is the concern? I mean why should you be concerned if your company is not acting responsible, it’s not like you are personally involved and after all, you are doing a great job. In this country we are all held Accountable for our actions, so shouldn’t the companies we do business with also be held Accountable? Yes they should, and we all have the right to chose who we will and will not do business with.
“Corporate social responsibility used to be simple: Present an oversized check to charity, get photographed with some sick kids, and call it a day. Now the world's largest corporations are expected not only to make money for their shareholders but also to do well by their stakeholders” (Demos, 2005, p.1).
Global Ethical Accountability: Aims to generate wider commitment to the principles and values of ethical accountability; increase the accountability of global organizations to those they affect; and strengthen the capacity of civil society to better engage in decision making processes.
