The movie Girl, Interrupted, is about an 18 year old girl named Suzanna who has been placed into a mental hospital for 18 months for having borderline personality. During her stay at the mental hospital, she had a roommate who was a pathological roommate and she also became friends with a sociopath, Lisa. Suzanna and Lisa together escape the mental hospital to attend parties and have sex with strangers. They also visit a friend, Daisy, who was in the same mental hospital; except she was mistakenly released. Daisy, an emotionally sensitive and extremely insecure girl agrees to let her friends Suzanna and Lisa spend the night with her. Lisa is very cruel to Daisy and since Daisy is so emotionally fragile, she commits suicide. The girls find that she hung herself the next morning. Lisa flees, but Suzanna stays and calls the police. After being caught as runaways from the mental hospital, they got returned back and thing’s are not looking so good between Lisa and Suzanna anymore. Lisa tries to attack Suzanna in the basement, but Suzanna stands up for herself and stays away from Lisa. Suzanna then realizes that she needs to take care of herself and pursue her treatment, so she focused on her treatment and was released after her treatment was complete.
Suzanna got diagnosed with having borderline personality; which is a serious mental illness that is characterized by pervasive insecurity in moods, interpersonal relationships, self-image, and behavior. The insecurities negatively affect and disturb family life, work life, long-term plans, and the person’s sense of self-identity. They’re nearly “border-line” of psychosis. Those who have borderline personality also suffer from a disorder of emotion regulation. Borderline Personality is not as well known as schizophrenia but it’s more common. Twenty percent of people with borderline personality are hospitalized in a mental institution.
