In the years following the Civil War, the South needed to be seriously reformed from the political, social, and economic standpoints of society. The demise of King Cotton called for a new economic standard in the former Confederate states. The Union League’s migration into the southern United States became the main vice for freed slaves who remained in the South and wished to politically organize themselves. The creation of the Freedmen’s Bureau was able to assist the emancipated slaves intended to serve as a sort of welfare agency. However, with the Compromise of 1877, these reforms were mostly eradicated and the ideals for equal rights among races wouldn’t return to the premise of American history for another century. After the publishing of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, the European nations refused to be involved in the dispute between the Union and the Confederacy as a direct result of their underlying sympathy for what they were made to believe was the slavery conditions in the American South. This spiraled into the loss of Europe’s financial support of the Confederate State’s cotton kingdom, which in turn lost the majority of their advocators and thus threw King Cotton into a swift demise. Also, following the passing of the Emancipation Proclamation, plantation owners were unable to harvest the cotton as cost effectively as they were prior to the order to grant their slaves freedom. They were now unable to make as much of a profit off of their goods due to the need for some of that income to be passed onto those who worked on the plantation with them since free labor was no longer acceptable. The Southern legacy of the cotton industry certainly outlived itself, with the diminished fertility left behind on the land that once cultivated the crop it was a major problem left for the Southern farmers to face.
