What scene made the biggest impression on you? Why?
I really liked the scene when Becky convinced Arnie to go down in the water whit her. It showed Gilbert that Arnie isn’t a lost case. Gilbert is has never lost faith in Arnie, but before the scene whit the water Gilbert had lost a bit of his faith in Arnie and I think that showed him on the right path again. I think it is also the scene when he felt something for Becky for the first time.
What role does Gilbert have in the family? Has he taken the role voluntarily or was it forced on him? What is expected of Gilbert from his family?
He is playing the father role. And it was expected of him when his father died. So you can say it was forced on him. Gilbert’s job is to mainly take care of Arnie And also bring in the money to the house.
Meeting Becky changes Gilbert’s life. How? What does she inspire in him?
I think that she inspired him to see that there is a life for him at the place he is in and that doesn’t need to move away to find a place where he belong. She made him feel like he was in the right place.
When Becky asks what Gilbert wants, he asks for things for everyone but himself.
What is the detriment of caring exclusively for others? Is this a noble attitude?
He doesn’t see what’s best for him or he doesn’t care. And I think it’s quite noble to do so, think of others be for himself. But I also think it’s important to do things for one self.
There is a lot of shame and guilt in the Grape family. How is shame and guilt different?
Should they feel guilt or shame for any reason? What is the effect of these feeling on the family?
Shame is something I think I am. Guilt is something I think I do. For example: Guilt says I've made a mistake; shame says I am a mistake. And the effects are, if we take Gilbert as an example. He felt guilt for his father’s death and that made him to take the papa role in the

As a child, much of the minds of people reflect on bright, bittersweet moments filled with positivity and innocence. However, young children may also have a sense of knowing right from wrong, while feelings of guilt emerge from little to big mistakes. In the passage from “1996”, Gary Soto’s continuous thoughts of guilt convey themselves through a shameful tone, vibrant imagery, and conventional biblical allusion showing that the guilt associated with wrong-doing ends in self-destruction.…

Later in the movie we see Gilbert packing groceries into the back of his truck, then out of nowhere the cameras pan to Ellen who is chasing Arnie as he sprints for the ladder to the water tank, and he does in fact reach the ladder and get a couple of steps up when Ellen catches him and pulls him straight off. She then begins to punch him and pull his hair. Gilbert sees this and intervenes by pulling Ellen off of Arnie and tells her that “no-one ever hurts Arnie.” This is a pivotal scene because it is one of very few scenes where Gilbert shows some emotion. He is extremely mad and worried for Arnie. He again says “no-one hurts Arnie.”…

From a Christian perspective, guilt is the feeling that we get when we know we have failed in obeying the commandments of God, or that we have acted in ways contrary to what we believe is right. The Baker's Theological Dictionary of the Bible (2000) emphasizes a positive aspect of guilt, according to the author, guilt can be beneficial in the following manners: “A deep feeling of guilt, even if caused by oppressive parenting, can yet have positive effect in deepening our appreciation of our failures before God and the debt of obedience that we owe.” (Elwell, 2000 p.319)…

At the beginning of the film, Gilbert was already experiencing stress and massive responsibilities. It all began with the death of his father. Due to his father's death, Gilbert was left with the responsibility of having to provide for his family, keep his father's “house” standing, and protect his family. In order to do this Gilbert was forced to find a job, which he found at a dead end supermarket. On top of his job Gilbert was making sure that his family's home was safe to live in by having repairs made, and looking for any faults in the house. Furthermore, Gilbert then had to protect his family by letting no one hurt them or make fun of them. In a matter of time Gilbert was already given the weight of being the “ man of the house”, this is…

Here, Gilbert's subject is herself. Reeling from a contentious divorce, a volatile rebound romance and a bout of depression, she decided at 34 to spend a year traveling in Italy, India and Indonesia. "I wanted to explore one aspect of myself set against the backdrop of each country, in a place that has traditionally done that one thing very well," she writes. "I wanted to explore the art of pleasure in Italy, the art of devotion in India and, in Indonesia, the art of balancing the two." Her trip was financed by an advance on the book she already planned to write, and "Eat, Pray, Love" is the mixed result.…

In Rosenblatt’s essay an article states that you always hurt the one you love and in Gilbert’s case he did. Gilbert’s wife was suffering from the disease Alzheimer’s, and it made Gilbert feel wrong because he chose to kill her rather than continue to live with his wife’s situation. He ended her life was morally unacceptable and keeping her alive would only put her in pain for a longer period of time. Gilbert was humane, civilized and he killed his wife which was…
